I am the new pround owner of a 70-200 VR. I am also a 'free spirit' photographer. I like to have one or two lenses, never in a restrictive bag, always ready to shoot. My D200 is always slung over my shoulder and I shoot everywhere I can.

That being said, this monster is heavy and huge. I can hook it loosely on my belt with it over my shoulder, but its not very secure. I want a decent carrying solution. I've heard of Kirk replacement feet with straps, etc. So fill me in. What works for you and what doesn't? People who carry large lenses, advise me please!

That lens is heavy enough that you shouldn't let it 'hang'. You need to hold on to that with your hands while it's attached to the camera.

Well, not being the best person for following good equipment caretaking guidelines. I have let my 70-200 'hang' for 5 years now (and it works hard 10 months of the year). So far it's OK. I DO keep the lens hood on it so if it contacts something when I'm not paying attention (often) there is a shock absorber there! Congrats on the new Big Gun!

I use a Tamrac Boomerang strap around my neck most of the time when I'm just carrying the camera around like at the zoo or something. I do tend to hang on to the camera with my 70-200 2.8IS attached, just in case because it has the quick release clips. The neoprene strap really lightens the load too.

When using the 70-200 (2.8L IS here) I just carry it around attached to the camera and slung over my shoulder.

When shooting larger events or hiking in nature, I put it in a pouch on my Kinesis (//kgear.com) belt when it isn't attached to the camera.

It's only when using larger lenses like 300/2.8 and 400/2.8 I use the lens strap over my shoulder.

As Ristyz also mentions, it's a good idea to have the hood mounted on the lens while it's slung over the shoulder, as it's much softer than the lens and takes bumps/beatings better. :)

I ocasionally carry a 70-200/2.8 on all-day expeditions. I keep the hood attached, and to take the weight off my shoulder I either loop two fingers around the end of the hood, or for longer, hands-free periods I put the tripod mount in a back jeans pocket, leaving the camera strap over my shoulder. I'm comfortable all day this way.

spent today carrying arround my 70-200 sigma by hand - i usually wrap my strap a couple of times around my wrist and carry the camera by 2 fingers holding onto the tripod collar.. i only time i use my strap to actually hang off of my shoulder is when i'm carrying my 3yr old around when she's tired..
