You come home from work to see a box sitting on the doorsteps of your back door. A major delivery company has dropped if off during the day while you were gone. You pick it up and notice it is labeled with someone else name with your address. You bring it inside and sit it down. You intend to call the carrier but as the evening passes you start to speculate what’s in the box. After a few hours you can’t stand the temptation any more and have to look inside; it’s a Canon 5D with two L-lens.

Now the dilemma - what do you do? Do you still call the carrier?

ETA: This is a hypothetical Question - Did not happen to me.

If you don't call the carrier, they are going to come looking for you eventually.

Did you order a 5D? If not, then yes, you need to call the carrier.

I'm sorry, I gave them the wrong address, PM me and I'll give you mine to forward it to. Thanks for being so honest, I realy, really appreciate your help in this matter.

Call the carrier! Once the intended recipient calls the carrier will remember what house he left the box at. Ok, shoot a few shots first, then return it. lol

Hmm. It is Thanksgiving. If I did keep it I would sell it fast and buy something that cant be traced back to that delivery.

Make sure you seal it back up so that they can't tell you opened it....way to admit a federal offense :)

If I were evil I would begin using my new camera and lenses without guilt. The carrier dropped it off at the wrong address without getting a signature. The person who was supposed to get the package will be compensated and they still get their package (eventually).

Of course I am NOT an evil person and I would probably give the carrier a ring. Darn my mother...raising me with values and all that crap!

:)

Hey!!! Thats my box!!!

Everyone knows that Canon sucks. So of course I'd contact the sender. Now if it had been a new Pentax 645 Digital, hmmmmmm.

-Just joking about the Canon Sucks thing-

I learned a few years ago that my honesty threshold extends past $650,000. Long story. I'd probably contact the sender first.

Yea, I would call the carrier. If it was my 5D and it was delivered to someone else by mistake, I would want them to do that for me.

OR, I would look up the name in the phone book and tell them that their package was delivered to me by mistake, and where would they like to meet me to get it.

The hard part is going to be justifying why I opened it in the first place. :/

claim there was a ticking and that you checked through fear of your own safety....then claim that an insect of some sort was released apon opening. >_> just an idea anyway.

or you could do this, Look up the name on the package call the person and ask them if they ordered a camera. then tell them there new EOS-350D Rebel XT was shipped to your house by mistake.

The right thing to do is contact the person and tell them you have their shipment. Do it fast so the temptation doesn't get the best of you.

I'd keep it. When the carrier comes back to your house I would tell them the neighbourhood has been plagued by petty theft and that in your opinion you would never be so stupid as to leave such an important package on a doorstep. Tell them to go file a police report and steer them in the direction of your most annoying neighbor. (just make sure you weren't caught on tape!!)

You go to social security office and change your name... j/k

The carrier really left it where they were supposed to leave it - no error on their part. (You mentioned that the address was correct).

Now, if you know the person you may visit with them tomorrow and take a few shots of their surprised faces. (There is a reasonable chance that a neighbor messed up the street number, and you could/should know that).

With so many devout believers on this site, nobody suggested that it is a gift from the skies (or from below)?! Santa coming early? Drunken elf got the name wrong?

If I found it on the side of the road after it had fallen out of a truck I'd keep it since the delivery company has insurance and would replace it for the buyer anyway. But if it was just delivered to the wrong house I'd call up and return it.

If a chorus of Hallelujah breaks out and a golden stream of light rises from the box I think you could actually keep it.

Of course I'd be worried if God knew my address but not my name.

Oh, I so needed that chuckle just then. :)

I'm sure this is a joke, but in anycase, every photo that is taken with that camera will have a serial number in the EXIF data. So all canon or anyone has to do is do a good internet search for any photos that have that digital signature in it. Difficult, ya but possible.

I still say send it to me, it'll be harder to track that way, you will have complete deniability other than this thread at DPC ;)

I'd be well annoyed if the camera had actually been addressed to me and they'd just dropped it off at the doorstep.

Honnestly, if it was on my doorstep, just sitting there...
I would keep it, and not feel guilty about it.
Even if I ordered it myself and find it, just standing there for everyone to see and take home, I would call the people I ordered it from and ask them where my package was.
It would be totaly careless of the delivery guy (m/f) to just leave it there...

I would keep it and be happy with it.

I am NOT a nice guy ;)

Do they really put packets with contents like that on people's doorstep while they are not at home?

If that's the case, I would have never received a packet in the first place as it would have been stolen within 10 minutes (and I live on the country, as far as you can speak of "country" in this overcrowded underwaterland).

If it were still there I think I would keep it and tell the courier the above. :)

No, you are Dutch, I have the same ideas as you.

hmmmm... 5D or guilt... 5D or no guilt... hard call... hypothetically I never saw it :-)

I think it should become a rotating DPC camera, keep it for a month and them forward it to another Canon owner (or maybe all members since it came with glass). :-)

The Dutch have no shame!!!!
