Ok, I'm confused. . . How do you know what scores you're getting before the end of voting? Is this just another feature on the site that I'm missing, or are we doing advanced math on the average vs number of votes? (I'm a Nuclear Reactor Operator, not a rocket scientist. :)

Its math. I have it set up in an excel spreadsheet. But basically its:
(current score divided by # of scores) minus (next current score divided by number of scores). I can send you the excel file if you PM an email addy.

Yeah, cause the update button just isn't addictive enough on it's own! :)

EB, you'll get some odd results sometimes if someone votes and someone else changes a vote at the same time. It might tell you that you got an 11 or a -4 lol
11/22/2006 06:50:59 PM · #157
11? I'd be jumping for joy! -4. . . . sounds about right. :)
11/22/2006 06:57:05 PM · #158
Got one of those 11s on my postcard last night. :) It's a nicer treat than a 1!
11/22/2006 07:00:50 PM · #159
As long as it doesn't count as two 1's.

YAY! I put my score in, and it seems that I got an 843! :)

(I'm kidding here. . . I really do get the math.)

Now if you were an über-geek you might write a little script to snag the update score once every ... oh, I don't know ... five minutes, put the info into a mysql database and have a web page to graph your score for you.

You want trends baby? You can get down and dirty and not miss a beat!

Expect joy, anguish, love, hate, expectation, failure, jubilation, fear, frustration, ecstasy, bliss, and acceptance ... not necessarily in that order.

It's like a relationship, only worse. :)

I do it but it's not a user friendly process to setup. Once setup, there's not much to it though. You need a program like Paros that will let you intercept some of the stuff going back and forth between your pc and DPC. Then you need to periodically fire off something like lynx or wget to send that same info to DPC in order to be able to scrap your scores off the 'screen' (screen in quotes because of course this is all done at a shell prompt). Specifically you need the values of PASSHASH and USERNAME which are in the cookie that dpc pushes down to you because only by having these values available are you able to get DPC to return a page with your scores on it (the page you see when logged in as oppossed to the normal guest page).

Take what you scrape, parse it down into # votes/Score/0/0 and feed those four values to a utility called MRTG. MRTG will make you a nice little graph out of the results.

So there you go. Don't download Paros at work or you will probably be getting walked out.

I saw a high of 6.2000, but now it's down to around 5.8. Oh well!

How do you know what were the last few??

If you keep a record of your scores/number votes received, you can figure it out. If you have one vote, 7.0 score, that was a 7 right? 2 votes, 7.5 score, you figure:

7.0 x 1 = 7
7.5 x 2 = 15
15 - 7 = 8 : second vote was an 8.

average x number votes received = total score received

do this before and after, and subtract the first from the second to calculate the differential. Divide the differential by the number of new votes received, and you have the average of the new votes received.

125 votes, average 6.000:
125 x 6.0 = 750 points total score

127 votes, average 6.0629:
127 x 6.0629 = 770 points total score

770 - 750 = 20
20/2 = 10.0

Your last two votes were 10's :-)

R.
