Beyond the camera I have no "equipment". I'd like to take some "studio" type shots of the kids and family for Christmas. I don't have a studio, I have a lounge room :) My question is, what should I buy first. I thought some kind of lighting and reflector. I will buy fabric for backdrops but what's the best way to hang them? We are in a rental and can't secure anything to the walls. What are the best lights for this kind of thing? The room is quite a dark room so using natural light is difficult. Any advice would be welcome! |

What kind of budget are you looking at?

Well I don't want to spend a fortune just yet. I guess I'm not sure about budget as I have no idea what prices these items are. I'm looking to do it the cheapest way possible without compromising quality. |

I'd say first go for a light meter and a reflector and learn to work with natural/available light and your own furniture/room/outdoors, etc.. Later, perhaps a backdrop, but you need enough space to keep your subjects seperated from them, a backdrop stand would work for supporting it.

I did this shot with one flash and a reflector made out of foamcore and aluminum foil. I don't know if your camera has a synch cord to time your shot with the flash or not but you would need something like that. I took anything in here that looks like a studio or indoors with 500 watt worklights you can get anywhere. I am not sure of your budget and am just getting started too. But I found worklights a good way to practice, mostly on myself, though because they get hot.

I wish I had posted this when I first started. While Cindi is right with the light meter, most cameras today have built in meters that work just fine.....provided you use it correctly. A reflecting umbrella is also a good first choice, but a piece of white cardboard could do a good job also. I would say the first thing (other than good lenses) would be a flsh.....you could always improvise a reflector, diffuser, etc.
