I think the wood duck is probably the most beautiful duck on the planet. The adult males have the most beautiful colors. There is at least one adult male that inhabits one of my local parks but I have not seen him recently. I stumbled across this young male today though and had a difficult time getting close to get a decent photo.

Young Male Wood Duck

Hopefully when my new toys get here, i'll be able to get some better photos.

You are right John, it's a female wood duck.

And I agree that the Wood Duck is probably the most beautiful of all the North American species.
I also like the Harlequin Duck and the Ruddy Duck because of their coloring. The male ruddy ducks also have a hilarious mating ritual during which they stick their tails straight in the air and taps their bills on the water's surface at breakneck speed. A treat to watch.

Another spectacular duck is the Mandarin Duck, which can be found in some parks and many zoos all over the world. I think their distribution is China and myabe other countries of the Far East.

OMG John, this duck is beautiful. I thought the mallards we had in this area were beautiful but the wood duck is gorgeous. The colors are hypnotic.

I went back to the park today and managed to get some shots of the male and female. I still coulnd't get close enough to suit but I'll keep trying because I really want a great photo of this male duck...

He's beautiful, jm. The female is cute, too. Good work.

Very nice! The male certainly does have beautiful markings. I assume these were cropped, otherwise I have no idea why you're complaining about not being close enough. :)

Both of them are cropped out of the originals.

Have a 23 acre wetland (swamp) behind the house. Every spring and through the summer, it is "birder" heaven. Had the Audobon society out a few years ago with a documented nesting of Hooded Mergansers. They made house in the wood duck box. One year we even had an American Bitern. Lots of excitement on that one.

Wooducks are certainly colorful (sometimes called "painted" ducks). We'll typically have a couple of families nested. Then of course are the mallards and geese. With the prey birds (hawks/owls), the natural order keeps time.
