I had an idea of reflecting the pencils in aluminium foil but I`am somehow not satisfied with what came out. What do you think I could have done? Composition? Colors? etc. The idea seemed nice to me

it is a good idea
but i would raise the pencils so you see no 'surface', no bottom shadow, make them appear to float ..
either use smooth foil or find a flexable mirror (i'm told camping stores sell them though i haven't found one either ... )
the biggest probelm is finding a 'front surface' mirror/ reflective surface
most mirrors are reflective on the back so you get ghosting from the front surface as well .....

| Thanks. Do you think I should haverisen the bottle as well together with pencils? I can try in photoshop to delete the shadow to see how it looks. And than will try to shoot it again |

i would make it so the bottom of the bottle was not visible at all

| I got comments on unsharpened pencils (that I can fix) and blurred immage. But how can I sharpen the immage if my camera is only 1.9 megapixels and macro can be shot only from no closer than 10cm? In the full, unedited image you can see almost the whole pencil. So I had to crop it, and when I did obviously it came out blured. I couldn`t use unsarp mask too much because it was becoming too ugly, so had to leave it as it was. What should I have done? (oh, and I don`t have a trypod :( is it possible to shoot from hands something like this? )Thanx in advance |

| If you don't have a tripod, one thing that I have found helpful is to set the shot up so that I can prop the camera up on a book, bag of rice, etc. Then, set the timer and let it go. That way, the camera is "steady" and you won't have camera shake. |

| I should try this as well. And what about the focus? I don`t have manual focus and it kept focusing at the bottoms of the pencils :( (the part that was actually cropped) |

For focus -- if your camera is like the point and shoot I used to have (no manual focus), what can help is to make sure that the very center point of the lcd or viewfinder is on the spot you want focused. Press the shutter button until is "locks" the focus, then recompose (still holding the shutter button to keep the focus locked) and completely press the button.
What this does is allow you to focus where you want, then recompose.
I don't know if I have explained that very clearly. |

| I would use more light and a higher aperture to increase the DoF. That's a fantastic idea though! |

| Yes you are right, I need more light. That was my table lamp which definately is not enough. Will try to figure this out (maybe ask the neighbours if they have a spare one) :) |

Yea, if you have a focus "square" put it over the spot you want to be razor sharp. In this picture, probably where the points meet the aluminum, I would think. Then, push the shutter halfway down, and it should focus itself, then "lock." By continuing to hold the shutter halfway down, you can then move the camera to compose the shot however you want it.
The camera will *remember* the distance to the focused spot, so it will still be focused, even if it is not in the exact center now.
At least, I hope that works for you.
