Good tip... It's a real pain having to get a reissued passport because you got an inconvenient stamp in your passport (for some reason tearing out passport pages is frowned upon) :-/

UV Filter, Fast lens, Be aware of your surrounding (more then usual) - otherwise enjoy, it sounds like fun. Oh, and keep you head down :-))

To answer one of your first questions the 1gig holds about(never the same) 300 or so photos. You will probably want to take more than that I was in Japan and If I wasn't able to download then I would have needed 3 or 4 of the 1gigs for the 3 weeks I was there (and 90 percent of them were taken in a 3 day weekend).

Also DON'T FORGET YOUR BATTERY CHARGER!!!
(I did that and was lucky enough to have a store that recharged it for me for free)

Oh...that would make me feel LOTS safer.

My friend Kate has lived in Israel for extended periods a couple of times ... I remember her telling me how it's about the only place in the world where a bunch of teenagers with machine guns get on the bus and you suddenly feel much safer ... all of the Security Forces are required to carry their guns with them at all times, so don't be shocked.

I went on vacation for 10 days to Japan and shot over 30GBs of RAW. The weather was overcast and it rained throughout the trip, thus the RAW.

If the weather is good in Israel, then Jpg should work out fine. If you have a circular polariser bring it.

Brought a flash but hardly used it on vacation. Diffently bring the Pentax A 50mm f/1.7 MF . Your Promaster 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 XR IF would probably be the lens that will be on your camera most of the time.

i wouldn't think that would be a problem. just about every single person carries a gun, so it wouldn't matter much

Heck, here in Texas we all carry guns too, so is that something ya'll should be worried about? Hummmmmmmmm ;)

BTW, how many pics should my 1g sd card hold? (not shooting raw)
I have 2 512mm cards as well.

Thanks in advance!!

1 gb = approx. 330 @ jpg *** (highest quality)
512mb = approx. 167 @ jpg *** (highest quality)

Casual sight seeing or going there just to take pictures? If you are going there for casual sight seeing you may not shot too much.

Why is this?

Because many (if not most) Muslim countries will refuse entry to anyone who has an Israeli visa on their passport or even if they suspect the person has been in Israel.

This is correct. I had to get a new passport after going to Israel. Even if you don't get the stamps at the border, some immigration officiers will deduce from the border crossing points (and exit stamps) that you must have been there. So be careful.

Saying that, the visa application form for many Islamic stats will ask you directly if you've been to the Israel (they have another name for it).

You will not get into Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and any Gulf state (to name a few) with Israeli stamps.

You will need MORE than 2 x 512 MB SD cards, get one of these Portable hard drives like the Epsons or Wolverines or FlashTraxs. Use common sense when it comes to safety. Try to go to Jordan if you have time, Petra in Jordan is a must-see. The market in Jerusalem's old quarter is a must see too...Sunscreen SPF 45 at least...it's hot there!

Agree with going/coming to Jordan but it's getting colder in the area, no hot sun now!!! The average high temperature in November and December is around 15 max 20 Celsius quite a lot warmer by the Dead Sea and in Aqaba or Eilat by the Red Sea though. You may get rain as well so bring a jacket as evenings and nights can get cold.

Enjoy your trip, talk to the people, the shopkeepers and go to coffee shops. The religious holy places in Jerusalem and the old quarters you cannot skip. The old buildings are just beautiful. People in Israel/Palestine ARE a friendly lot, you don't have to be afraid as a foreigner and a visitor..

1. On the hill that leads up to Jerusalem from the SW, there are a bunch of bedowins, with, shacks, camels, goats, etc.

2. Down by the dead sea, the desert makes wierd wav ylines, carved by wind, etc. If you go later on, they create amazing shadows.

3. If you're near the golan heights, try to get to an ex. syrian mine field (they're not hard to find.) They re litttered with old cars and trucks that have been blown up.

It takes a bit of tweaking to play with RAW since there's so much you can do to the image and sometimes you don't know if you overworked it. You can do HDR type images that you've seen lately.

Not sure if it will read your files since PSCS doesn't have continuously upgraded RAW for newer cameras. PSCS2 would be able to work as it is their newest program.

You can also upload Pentax lab 3 which is available on their website. Haven't used it much since I'm so use to Rawshooter.

Hi all,

I thought I would piggy-back off this old thread...
I'll be in Israel on business for about 4 days next week. I'll only have one free day, which I was planning to use to go see Jerusalem, the rest of the time I'll be in Tel Aviv. So, I have 2 questions:

1. Is it safe to have my camera there (pretty expensive D2x) or should I take one of my backups (most likely D70)? (Please don't find this questions offensive in any way--I don't even take my D2x when I go home to Brazil--it's just not worth the risk) Like I said, I'd only be around Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, I doubt there's much theft or robberies, but I figured I should check with those who know.

2. Does anyone know of any tour group, or what the best way to see Jerusalem is?

Thanks so much!
