Nobody is upset and did you know christmas is one the only holiday the people in business are actually getting rid of??? They (which I agree with) and not allowing christmas decorations, pointsetas, christmas trees etc. allowed to be displayed in the work place (refering to corp.) Its called being pollitically correct (not that I am) and if living on an island was a bother then you have the ability to change it and I'll even help you move.

Two separate challenges:
Christmas for those who do.
Christmas for those who don't.

I personally find christmas the most distasteful of all the pagan celebrations adopted by the catholics while many of my past coworkers who were pagans were equally split between those who were offended by having the holiday 'stolen' by the 'christians' and those who thought it was the best because it really highlighted the harmony between their paganism and catholicism's pagan foundations... It didn't create a need to turn it into a debate every time we talked about it though...

Therefore, if we kept things to each camp, perhaps we could each call on our own maturity AND satisfy our take on a holiday which is certainly non-universally loved... no matter what Hollywood has to say about it.

All I was saying is people who wouldn't want to do such a challenge could ingnore it and enter the other challenges running at the same time.

A little tollerance goes a long way. I wouldn't get upset if there was a challenge about a different religion or celebration that I did not believe in.

I second that.

If you believe Christmas is just a pagan holiday and don't celebrate it then leave the challenge alone. If you believe it is a celebration of the birth of Christ (as I do) then celebrate it that way and enjoy the challenge. Just cause it was a pagan holiday in the past doesn't mean it is still pagan or can't share the date with something else, I'm sure this isn't the ONLY date that had some other holiday or event on it first.

If you come across a bad tv show or type of music you don't agree with or like on the radio do you just listen to it anyway or go ahead and sing along? No, you have (well most of the time) a choice and can deal with it by turning it off or changing the channel.

But Christmas as you know it (dec.25) is not the birth of christ. Its was adoptde by the catholic church way back when cuz it was close to the birth date of christ and was wide celebrated by the majority (which were not christians).

Yes I do know that, it is the same as when we celebrate Presidents Day. It doesn't necessary fall on Washington or Lincoln's birthday but since it was close to both the decided on a standard Monday to simplify it and give us a 3 day weekend. Does that mean that if that date also happened to be celebrated by someone else (say pagans for instance) that it overshadows the honoring of the presidents and we shouldn't honor them cause of it?

And also know that some of the "pagan" traditions were adopted by Christians, like the Christmas Tree since the tree was a celebration of a renewal of life (what was Christ but an example of how God is above everything when he renewed His life) among other stuff that may or may not be anti-christian even though they are called pagan.

I think the scope of a Christmas challenge is too narrow and potentially offensive. I understand that there's been a big push lately, especially in American culture as the religious right strikes back at political correctness, to lash out at anything that "takes the Christ out of Christmas". However, I'm not suggesting making individual photos so generic and stripped of their religious individuality. Simply, to limit it to just Christmas can and will be interpreted as saying that Christmas is best and no one else matters. Make it a Winter Holiday challenge so everyone can shoot whatever they like, whether it's near and dear or exotic to the photographer, no one feels excluded or marginalized, and you still get a ton of Christmas photos... with a few Hannukah, Winter Solstice, and maybe even a couple Kwanzaa and Ramadan photos. Let it be open to whatever you celebrate during the season of giving. Limiting it to just Christmas feels pushy and is bound to make the non-Christians among us a bit irritable.

No, they had no idea when the birth date of Christ was. They were trying to create an easy transition for pagans (by which I mean citizens of the Roman Empire who were not Christians) who were used to having a very important holiday on that day. In other words, they were trying to be politically correct! hahahahaha

...except that for a large group of us, Christmas is in the middle of Summer time!! It's usually 30C at midday on Christmas Day, and we either leave off the huge hot cooked meal in favour of salads, cold meats, ice-cream...or save the traditional cooked feast for Christmas Eve or Christmas night when it's cooled down a bit!! No A "Winter Holiday" challenge wouldn't be all-inclusive :(

Best suggestion yet is the dual challenge "Christmas if you do" / "Christmas if you don't"... within that there are masses of possibilities including Christmas for those who are marginalised because of age and separateness from family, street kids, orphanages, people in hospital over Christmas etc.. who don't do Christmas simply because they have been marginalised! Take the topic and be bold and step outside the box... submit photos that are not postcardish and fit for chocolate box lids!

I should edit it to say "year-end holidays" - that's what I actually meant ;-)

Just one more little voice:

I like the "Holiday" idea. Everyone has them regardless or season or religion. Even if you don't celebrate them, you can still have an entry depicting them. Now, with that title, you may get anything from Easter Bunnies, to Christmas, to Chinese New Year, but it would yield an ecclectic bunch of entries. Might be fun to see everyone's perspectives.

everyone seems to be missing one very important point. December 25th is one of the most important days of the year and needs to be celebrated with as much vigor as possible. I mean it is in fact the day that I was born. I hence forth propose a "birth of Elvis Lawson" challenge. and I will give bonus points to anyone that takes photos of Wiesbaden Germany, my place of birth:)

Photographing what a typical Elvis day is like or would have been like has more appeal.

To set the record straight since i wasn't here when this conversation happened... my suggestion was "holiday setting"... not Christmas, Thanksgiving or any other specifics... just "holiday setting". Let's not forget - some people say "holiday" instead of "vacation". Got it now??!! :-D

All's i really wanted was some ideas about pretty table decorations. I personally would take a picture of a Thanksgiving table setting with a blurry background grandma getting a pie out of the oven. Someone else could took a pic. of what their dinner table looked like on their vacation(holiday). With me now??

:-D

Okay then...what about a Holiday Card" challenge..this would cover whatever "holy day" you select and you don't have to show exactly what you personally do on that day, but rather the type of card you would send to friends/family wishing them a Happy/Blessed/Peaceful whatever holiday...?
