My urban landscape received my highest rating so far and netted me 6th place, of which I'm really pleased. My dilemma all week has been, "Would one of the other shots I considered posting do better?" Well, please help me answer that question. Did I submit the right photo, or would one of these done better?
First, my 6th place photo:

IMG_1956 would have done well, but I dont think you'd have gotten higher than 6th place with any of your outtakes. Well done!

I agree, I gave your actual entry a 5, didn't get a chance to go back and explain why but the main reason was the cropping and the water in the front. The tighter crop would have gotten an 8 or 9 from me easily.

As for the other shots, all very nice, but you made the right choice in which picture, maybe just not the right crop.

They are beautiful shots

I also agree Harvey, although 1956.jpg is a very good pic, I think you chose the right one for the challenge. Yours was one of the 10's I gave. I don't think I gave more 10's for any challenge than I did for this one. Congrats on a good placing in such a tough challenge.

I gave your photo a high mark and I also like 1956 because of the tighter crop and I might have given that a slightly higher mark.

Thanks for the feedback. I got several comments about the water in front. I certainly thought about cropping and making it more of a panoramic, but to be honest, I liked the way the water looked in front. It seemed to make me feel more as if I was still standing on the island, looking back at the city rather than looking at a photograph. The water somehow puts it all in perspective for me.

So, it wasn't an oversight -- it was a conscious decision to leave the water in. Maybe I paid the price, but then again, I think -- and of course anything I write here is what I THINK and not what popular opinion should be, just me -- all those photos that scored better than mine deserved to score better. Well, all but one anyway... I won't say which one, and as previously stated but needing reiteration, this is just my opinion.

5th place :)

I like the fact that you left the water in, it makes it different from other entries and so it stands out.

I would have rated image 1956 lower. your actual had better color, reflection in the water, and a stronger message - "across the bay".

what would your message had been if it were image 1956? "3 buildings" perhaps? I'm positive you chose the right image.

LOL. Very eloquently said. I think titling was difficult for this shot and you're right -- there isn't a good one. I like the greater detail, but 1956 is more or less just pictures of buildings at night and not a true "Urban Landscape." I guess I did choose wisely.

Thanks everyone for their input and honest opinions. I appreciate each and every one. I honestly believe you are all helping me to become a better photographer, and in getting better, having more fun!

I also agree that the water is great were it is. You always see the sky left but not the water. This is a nice change from the norm.

The right choice in my opinion...I like the vertical with the peeling boat as well but the entry you submitted really was lovely

I also think that you definitely choose the best one even if there is some margin for wondering because the "1956" looks better on the miniature.

But then again, it could have given you more votes (as quantity) and possibly a lower average because the one you chose is even better.

Hmm. This is yet another thing to think about -- I really hadn't considered what the photo looks like as a thumbnail. I am one who thinks you really can't tell until you look at the 'full sized' (as full as it gets here anyway) photo, but not everyone thinks as I do -- some only scan the thumbnails and click the ones that interest them. Now I have one more thing to worry about when posting.
