Ok, i just got an ipod and i used to have a different kind of mp3 player, and ive been so confused.

I was asking my friend if i could get his music from him and he siad only if its formatted to a pc, because u can only format it to either a pc or a mac, and not both. So right now i have a pc computer, and if i get a mac, will my ipod not work?

it will work but you will have to reformat your ipod, thus losing all of your songs.

so what you need to do is if you upgrade to a new PC or MAC you need to migrate all of your music to the new machine and then sync your ipod to that computer

if my understanding is correct, what apple has done to prevent music theft is to allow the ipod to sync to one machine (doenst matter if it is a PC or a MAC) so when you buy a new machine (wether or not you are switching platforms) you will have to decide which computer you want to sync to and move all your music to that machine.

hope all of that was understandable

You can "authorize" any number of computers. When you first attempt to play a downloaded song using itunes on an unauthorized machine you will get a msg telling you that the machine is not authorized - but then it will let you log in to your itunes account and authorize the machine you are using...

Of course, if you want, you can get rid of itunes alltogether and just use drag and drop.... That's what I have done. Now I can copy music to and from any computer... Plenty of free software to allow you to do this on the net... google it.

as you have a pc at the moment, you can see the hidden files on your iPod and thus copy them to disc. And then onto your mac. You cannot do this on a mac without third party software. Ha 1 thing that a pc can do better than a mac.
