Hey guys,
Im new to the forums and all, so i would like to ask a question. Which camera would be better for me? the new XTi rebel, or the canon 30d? i am a photo student who takes a fair amount of pictures per week. Which one would be best for me? Any other advice?
thank you

What don't you like about the XT you already have?

The two you mentioned are pretty close.
You can compare side by side Here

If you can afford the 30D do-it.
Spot metering. Magnesium build. Better hand grip. More robust. Doesn't look cheep :). Bigger brighter viewfinder. 5fps burst mode.
That would be my choice.
I liked using the 400 better than the 350 though by a long shot. Still kinda feel toyish.

You could come over to the "dark side".
I'd reccommend the D80.

I second that, the D80 outshines the XTi IMO. (If that's the route you are thinking)

I'd go for the 30d. I have the 20d and love it. It is extremely fast at 5fps, so if that is something you'd like and can afford it, go for it.

As careful as we are with our cams, things happen. 45,000+ shots through my 20D without incident.

Yesterday, shooting an event, strap not wrapped around my wrist as usual, in a hurry to get the next shot...well the strap caught something and the cam was jerked out of my hand. My heart sank as it bounced across the room about 8 or 10 feet after hitting the ground from 3 feet up.

Picked up the cam and continued shooting not a problem yet. Also note, lens hoods not only prevent lens flare but protect in case of drops as well. My Tammy SP 11-18mm made it through the drop with flying colors.

Don't know if the XT or XTi would have made it through all that. Mag bodies are pretty rugged.

The "Daft" side seems more appropriate :)
Also if you are not 40+ years old and bald you may be questioned about your acquisition or sanity, both together probably.
hahaha.

Nikon have better kit lenses. KIT lenses.

the other day wihle shooting some landscapes i had my 30d on the tripod at about 6 foot up. while moving the tripod the legs closed some and it went down on a rocky road. it now has a big scrape on the top corner and still works like a champ. also not sure how my old rebel would have held up but i am glad my 30d did.

the 30d is a great camera and i like mine much more than my old 350xt.

ok so if i were to go for the 30d, would you recommend that i buy the body only then buy a lens that has about a 200mm or so zoom, maybe up to 300mm? or should i get the kit, then buy a lens?

This 30D kit with the 17-85 IS USM would be a great deal: //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=464952&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

(Is the 17-85mm really f4-5.6?? THat slow???)

If it's a kit with the 18-55mm EF-S, I wouldn't waste your money. Get something decent. Decide what kind of lens you want and just go for it - you'll want to buy a new one within a few days, regardless of what you get.

If you want a good, cheap all-around, I have a Sigma 17-70mm, which has worked incredibly well. (Yeah, yeah, I know, third-party glass, yadda yadda ... it was only $275 here in Taiwan.)

Sigma are rumored to make the glass for the Japanese manufactured Zeiss lenses. Sigma definitely make some good kit.

Yes, it is f/4-5.6. I guess they did that because of the IS.

Good lens, defs. Problem: won't work with any non EF-S mount Canon.

Go for the 30D. It feels so much better and can do so much more. If you plan on changing bodies in the next two years, then get an XTi, but if you plan on using it for the next while, go with the 30D. You'll like it better, i assure you.
