I am looking into getting a VR or image stabilization lens for my Nikon DSLR. I am looking at the 18-200mm VR from Nikon as an all around lens, but wonder if others have experience with other makers or the 18-200mm from Nikon itself.

I have that lens and like it. I can use wide angle or zoom in close. The VR comes in handy mainly when I use it indoors without a flash. The VR allows me to go to about 1/15 shutter speed with no "lens blur".

You can even go slower if you hold very steady.

Check out the DPreview Nikon SLR lens talk forum. Lots of discussion about the 18-200 VR and the competition. Don't just start a new discussion, search first there are thousands of posts written about it.

Thanks for you post and link - I did a quick look in this site and didn't find this link. I guess I was too specific in my search.

I meant that you can discuss it here all you want, the "don't start a new.."-bit was exclusively for dpreview itself. :)

I bought the Nikon 18-200 VR for travel a few months ago and have been very happy with it. My test shots have been very good in the range of say 24mm through 150mm or so. On the extremes you do experience some distortion but it is pretty minor and correctable for the most part.

I just got back from a trip to China and Bangkok where I took over 1,000 photos with that lens. Sorry that I do not have them ready for posting but on my first review of them I think I'm going to be happy. I did take a close look at some shots where I used the VR at ISO 400 and ISO 800 for some indoor shows and they came out very good. Obviously it did not stop the performer’s movement but when I timed my shots correctly I caught some nice ones. Colors were wonderful and rich.

I have used a Tamron 18-200 and a Tamron 28-300 in the past and they were not near the quality of the Nikon. No lens that is more than 3x is going to be perfect but so far I have been very happy with the Nikon 18-200 for what I intended it to be. It will never replace my 70-200 VR in terms of quality but is much easier to carry on a trip.

Hope that helps. I will eventually post my China shots so keep an eye out.

Any particular reason why you want VR? It's great for stills but won't help much with moving subjects.

Depends on how you photograph the moving subjects.
If they are moving and you stand still concentrating your frame on the scene where the moving subject moves in, in that case VR won't help.
But when for example you pan with your moving subject, the lens sensor will detect the panning direction and only correct for vertical vibration. That helps a lot with sports shooting and slow shutterspeeds to get those kickass background blurs. You can also do that with moving kids to get some great motion blur. Sure you do not necessarily need VR for that, but when panning with a 1.5kg 70-200 VR the whole day for example you'll get tired and the vertical movements increases while you pan (with shutterspeed down to 1/160s at 200mm or more when you add a TC)

I have the Nikon 18-200 VR, and I absolutely love the VR, lots more shots that you can make without flash. However, the distortion is bothering me quite a bit. It's very noticeable in most shots, and since I'm still using PS7 not very easy (read: difficult) to correct. So for wide-angle shots were I really need straight lines, I'm still bringing my Tokina 12-24mm. Otherwise, the 18-200 is great, especially for travel.

I have not picked it up yet, but I just ordered the 105mm f2.8 micro lens with VR It is just out from Nikon. Any comments on this lens would be appreciated :)
