I just read an really interesting article about offering photography services.

...
Professional photographers, hoping to stand out in a crowded market and build loyal clients and more referrals, are pushing year-long contracts and day-in-the-life shoots that capture people inside the hospital’s labor and delivery room, on vacation, at soccer games and even at the office and the classroom. Some of those long-term packages also include studio shots, such as black-and-white photos that document a woman’s pregnancy or an infant’s growth.

Article on new photographer trend

If I was a full time photographer it would certainly be the way I would go to expand my business. I not because I already have a 9-5 but I thought the idea would stir some interest, and for those who eat with their photography money might be a way of increasing the cash flow. (always a good thing)

Any comments? Love the idea? Hate the idea? (bump for the afternoon crowd).

I know a local pro who does that. She sells the package while mommy is still pregnant... the Package includes 4 photo shoots over the first year and at the end of the year a large 4 shot composition print. That's it. And she charges a fortune!

It was mentioned to me once about doing shots in Labor and Delivery, then doing a family portrait immediately after delivery. I don't think I could handle it though.

The other thing I've heard is up and coming is funeral photography.

I was thinking about that! I know a photographer that does parties... and not very well. I think I could do a nice job but I would have no idea who to do it for!

The idea isn't really all that new but I think it's a good thing except for the "pushing". A lot of photographers come away looking like used car salesmen to begin with. Being pushy doesn't help. Hopefully that was just a poorly chosen word of the journalist.

Funeral photography? Well I know it is another one of "the" times the family manages to get together, but hard to be sensative enough, since people often don't look their best. However I know from doing genealogy it is often the only time get a picture of older siblings together.

Yea, it's weird, I think. I believe the other "gist" is that the family can look back at the pictures and remember who was there, etc. because many times they may be too distressed to remember, or something like that.

Funerary photography was very popular around the turn of the last century. It's also very collectible now. It can be a very tasteful way of remembering a loved one.

I can't see anyone photographing a funeral. We buried my dad in april and I couldn't bear to pick up my camera for some time. I just dont want to relive that day at all.
