Maybe this should be in the rant category, but I am soooo disappointed in the bokeh challenge. I've voted on about 1/3 of them and not come close to seeing any 9's or 10's. Many don't have bokeh at all. What gives?

(I didn't enter this or the game one )

I have found the same as you, and I'm even being pretty liberal with the definition. I didn't enter this one either.

You haven't gotten to mine yet. Cheer up, there's still hope! :D

I have to admit that after looking through the entries, I'm a little put off by it. There really isn't anything that jumps out at me and there are many that DNMC.

OK, mine DEFINITELY has bokeh, is in DPC-friendly colors, and is simple in composition and presentation, and in my lowly, uninformed, and oft-ignored opinion, uses said bokeh to highlight the subject. And yet I still can't buy a good score.

The folks at work love it, that's a plus. (Caveat - coworkers are not registered users or members of DPC.)

I know what you mean, lots of shallow DOF macro flower shots. I cropped mine too tight to show my bokeh properly in hindsight, too excited with my first entry :)

Too many people looking for circles maybe. Bokeh ain't just circles.
10/25/2006 10:57:45 AM · #8
my bokeh is just not a "wow" picture...and neither are many of the others
10/25/2006 11:00:46 AM · #9
...and so it begins. Day 1 of Bokeh off to a predictable start with the definition police out in full force. Let the banter begin. Jeeessshh!!!

Plenty of bokeh in this challenge...I found about 20 that, to me, are DNMC (that's only about 4%). BUT, I found another 90 that grossly ignore all sorts of other photographic considerations....and about 100 that miss the mark on technicals and using bokeh to "enhance" the subject (again, imho). Having assigned a score to each entry at this point I'm left with 98 that I gave a 6 or better (or just 22%). Oh well, there goes my average vote given.

ditto.... :(

No excuses, it's simply missing in most images in the challenge. It strikes me that some members need remedial courses on this subject.

Any photo that has something out of focus can be judged by 'bokeh' standards. And in that respect it is not about good or bad pic, but good or bad bokeh. Or in other words "you really need a better lens".

There were some nice shots, and I'm sure yours was one of them.

So most images don't have any out of focus regions ?

See BOTH examples here

The flower bokeh example (which is gorgeous) does not have those "cute little circles". ;)

I love this passage near the beginning of the article you've provided the link to: "Although difficult to quantify, and hence open to debate...".

So true, so true... :D

Boy, you hit the nail on the head. I just finished and found one that is just superb, another that is pretty high up on the scale, and a few 7's. I hate voting below 4, but I've had to in this challenge. I even went so far as to comment. I'm sure I'll make some enemies. I was nice, and hopefully constructive.

I have some in mine, I think, maybe, or at least per a comment received by a
voter stating that he didn't find the use of Bokeh interesting at all in my picture.

Granted, I've only looked at a few entries, but so far I must have hit only the good ones, because I thought they were pretty good.

And I really don't like my own entry. Yuk! Contrary to last week, when I really liked my entry - funny thing is, this week I'm doing much better with the voters. Go figure.

Some guy told me that "bokeh is not dof" and said DNMC (nevermind that almost 90% of my image is bokeh), and typed out a link to, of all things, an article by Ken Rockwell.

lol
and to follow with the not interesting, just got a comment saying was a top pick.
Gonna' be a long bumpy ride folks. Buckle up!

That's basically what happened to me on the Oxymoron challenge. Tanked my average score given as only about 20% of the entries got above a 5.

Overall, I'm actually very happy with the first 100 images in the Bokeh challenge. I've seen a number of DNMC's that were blatant (IMO) attempts at just entering a photo and had nothing to do with Bokeh.

I've given out a number of 9's & 10's (which is rare for me) but based on the responses below, the other 300+ images I still have to vote on may not be as promising.

My image is doing poorly, but is getting about the score I thought it would. I had to use the lesser of only 2 real bokeh shots due to dates taken. What really killed me is that when using USM, I went with softer settings because they gave a nice appearance on my monitor. When I look at it today, it gives an Out of focus appearance and the score is reflecting it. Not proud of the technical portion of my entry, but the bokeh is above average. Maybe I'll do better in the wind challenge.

Edit: Uggh. You guys were right. I appear to be into the mediocre bunch now after my first 100 entries. Wish the random order had saved them for last.

Edit2: WOW! 14% DNMC's on my scale. I even went back to double check them all. Very sad. Just when I thought I was getting my score back up.

Edit: 3
Okay, I've done everything I can to give the benefit of the doubt and have gotten it down from about 60 DNMC's to 12 (it was a streeeetch too). So, it's down to about 2-3% DNMC's from what I can see.

Many photos are sharp from back to front?

Hmm.
