Since BradP didn't put what lens that is, I'll do it for him. :) That's the Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8, an excellent lens and a steal at $350ish. I'll be buying one in about a week.

I triple the recommendation - don't even look any further.

I did - just needed to click on it.

That lens rock. Got mine about a week ago and still can't believe how impressive it is for the price.

Oh, oops. Well now you don't have to click on it. :)

The 28-75 is great, it was one of my favorite lenses (I sold it).

That picture isn't the Canon version though, the Canon EF lenses don't have an aperture dial on the lens, it's controlled through the body.

why do you think you need a new lens?

Not sure what the OP's reasons are, but I'll promote the 28-75 on the following bases:
-the focal range is good for a walk-around lens
-the constant F/2.8 makes it great for lower light situations
-it is a superior lens (Tamron pro series) to the 18-55 kit lens, working faster and sharper

I have one and love it. In fact, it's so much better than the 18-55 that I can't stand to use the kit lens anymore, and am looking to replace it with the Tamron constant F/2.8 version, the 17-50, as I don't find the 28-75 quite wide enough for landscapes.

That said, depending on your combined shooting interests, you might consider the Tamron 17-50, although it's a bit more expensive.

The bad thing about the 17-50, though, is that it only works on APS-sized sensors (as far as I know). So if you're planning on moving to full frame or getting a film camera, you wouldn't be able to use it.

The 28-75 does work very well on film/full frame. For a lens that you can use with both, the Canon 17-40 4.0L is great. It's fairly expensive, but it's not too bad especially for an L lens.

A strong arguement for that lens ... I don't disagree with any of your points.

It puzzles me that sometimes people think they "need" a new lens, but don't really know why. The kit lens is only a poor performer wider then 35mm - which is too wide for portraits anyway. 35-55 is actually quite good (see here).

If you're looking for a sharper lens - get the 50mm 1.8
If you're looking for a better kit lens - the Tamron is great, but it doesn't cover the same focal range as the kit, so it's not a wise choice.
etc.

What is it about your current lenses do you dislike? You should know WHY you need a new lens before you start to consider options. It'll save you money :)

The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is a nice lens - i just got one and it's nice.
For portraiture the proper focal length varies depending on the subject - a head and shoulders vs 3/4 vs full or two or 3 or groups...etc. I just got a used one for $275. I think I like it a bit better than my sigma 18-50 2.8 - which is a good lens, but not a great one.

I've used from 40mm to 200mm for this - the 50-150 being the most useable range on a APS sensor camera, and now Sigma makes just such a lens. On a FF or film the 70-200 2.8 is the lens for portraits. Madman2k has teh same tamron 70-210 2.8 i have for sale -he's asking $350 - a steal if there ever was one. run, do not walk, to get that lens. you'll spend $900 to get anything else it that class and IMO the sigma isn't as good.

For the studio i use a tamron 24-135 SP 3.5-5.6. It's a great walkaround lens, super sharp and does macro too. It's fine for portraiture outdoors but I have other lenses for that - in the studio it's my first choice though and when I want only one lens it's the one i grab. about $400.
