Hi Friends and Foes,

I am asking for some input from you, if you are so inclined.
I am conducting a poll for owners of HDTV's..

I am interested in knowing the Following.

What Type do you have?
Flat Panel (LCD or Plasma)
Rear Projection (LCD, DLP, or LCOS)
Why did you pick one type over the other? IE:Cost, brightness, weight, etc, etc.

What Size is your Display?

What Resolution?

What Brand did you purchase?
What Model Number?

What special features does your particular model have that you feel increases the quality?

Are you happy with your purchase, if you could change it what would you get instead?

Any other information you wish to share.

Looking forward to your responses..

Thanks

well mine is a few years old so not really relevent to what you could buy now. but i have a rear projectoin 56". at the time flat TVs were crazy expensive but now I would most likely got that route. I have a panasonic and love it. My TV is worth every penny i paid for it. i don't watch HD very often but watching football on it is almost a religious experience. I keep telling the wife i need an 80" but she isn't listening:)

Samsung purchased on-line new-Amazon last November
Flat
DPL Projection
price, picture
56"
Model HLR5667W
Wouldn't change, love it.

We shopped around, looked at a lot of TVs and found one we could afford, and that was the right dimensions for our niche.

42" Panasonic Plasma EDTV (enhanced Definition)
Purchased 3 years ago
High contrast ratio, excellent picture quality

I still think the plasma picture quality is better than an equal size LCD.

View angle is greater than DLP, less eye strain than with DLP.

No so good for computer text (I have a Mac hooked up to it) mainly due to being ED rather than HD.

Also have a PS2 hooked, awesome game play, especially Star Wars Lego with the kid.

27" Panasonic with a super bubble screen. This thing is amazing, you can see glare from any angle. It is like a mirror and a tv. And talk about picture quality!, I can almost read those little emblems at the bottom of the screen! What are those things anyway?

61 inch Samsung DLP model HLP6163W

I spent several weeks at various stores checking out televisions before I bought this one. I believe that the DLP looks better than the LCD, but not as good as the plasma. However, the price difference, and the fact that DLP will last longer than plasma, I went with this one. It runs 1280X768 and will support a full range of input 720P, 1080I, etc. I have been very happy with this television and would the Samsung highly.

I have the same thing purchased around the same time and have been very happy with it. Obviously not HD but the same res as a normal DVD and just great picture quality compared to normal screens. I would certainly go with another Panasonic.

I think LCD's will eventually replace Plasma but right now the picture seems too shallow in comparason to me and most LCD's are not as large as plasma. The DLP models look great and are good value if you don't really want the flat aspect.

I did a lot of side by side comparision of broadcast HD programming comparing the ED to the HD and honestly could not tell the difference. Only when I hooked up the computer did I miss having the HD resolution. At the time the price difference was considerable. I paid $2500 for the ED, the same model in HD was selling for $5000. Today you can get HD for around $2000 for a 42" so it is not as much of an issue as it was 3 years ago.

I plan to get a 50" or bigger plasma to replace this one when the time comes.

Scarbrd--

I noticed you said you have a ps2 hooked to your plasma, Are you worried about any burn-in?
Or do you find the burn in issue to be over-hyped on plasma?
I agree that Plasma's still have a great picture and IMO, better blacks and brightness than LCD, what do you consider the cons vs LCD Flats?

Not that worried about burn in. The plasma has a feature that moves the image slightly from time to time to prevent burn in. We don't spend a lot of time gaming and I remind my wife and kid about leaving the plasma on when they are not watching it.

The blacks are the key to me. Contrast ratio reflects the ablility of the device to produce relative blacks. Pure black is almost impossible to attain for plasma since a certain amount of current has to be running through the plasma in order to operate.

I don't know enough about the LCDs to have a truly educated opinion. I spent a lot of time on the plasma purchase. What I do know, I have yet to see a large LCD screen that can match my 3 year old plasma. Several friends have purchased LCDs and I just do not see the same image quality. They all seem very pleased with the LCDs though.

I don't know if the scale is different for LCDs compared to plasmas, but and LCD with a contrast ratio of 1000:1 is high, plasma are now getting 10,000:1

The LCD screen appears to be slower too. By that I mean fast moving images appear not as sharp on the LCDs compared to the plasma.

All this is from my limited experience, but if I were going out tomorrow to buya flat screen I'd buy plasma.

I did run my first marathon in January. And I had to lose 130 lbs to do it. Can I play a little PS2? ;-)

I have a 40" JVC LCD I choosed this set for it's computer potential. First it is full 1080P resolution ( yes it displays this resoultion from my computer) it has a built in card reader 2 HDMI inputs two tuners a dedicated d-sub (computer imput) and best of all a great picture. It's a sleaper among the LCD TV's. Most of the time I do my photo work on this monitor since it has great colour and its black level is better than most dedicated computer monitors. Here is a thread on this fine TV/Monitor

Bumping my old thread--

I was set on dlp, but I think I am now going with a Toshiba 42" Plasma, the deal I can get will make it just around a 1000 dollars. The set has great reviews, and honestly thats about the perfect size for me. I am still concerned a bit about burn-in, but as previously posted, just be smart..

My HD programming including local channels is only gonna be an extra 6.95 a month, that over 20 HD channels (cable)..

Heres a link to the set.

Any thoughts?
