Oh, c'mon; we've had an absolute deluge of "different" challenges lately, many of them created by very recent request. The "other" open challenge is actually fascinating in its possibilities, and it's certainly not a repeat. It was suggested what, a month ago?

"Bokeh" is a technical challenge, just like High Contrast was. A lot of people want to see more technical challenges, and I don't blame them. However, by their nature technical challenges are short on variety and you will see the same challenges repeated frequently. Personally I see no problem with that, I like to have the chance to perfect something, you know? Anyway "bokeh" is an inherently interesting aspect of photography and one not enough people pay attention to. Any challenge that promotes awareness of shallow DOF techniques is a winner in my book.

Of course that's just my opinion...

It's likely the one open challenge is quite "open" to allow for the people who don't have sports stadiums close to them.

I do agree it's pretty soon, but I enjoy technical challenges.

For a moment there I thought it was "bocce", and I thought, "Hey, Italian, I like it!" But no, it's "bokeh". Oh well.

instead of BOKEH, which is highly associated with "shallow DOF",
maybe we can someday have a "deep DOF" challenge.

This will be another one where there will be oodles of discussion, and the winner will be shallow DOF instead of a true bokeh and I'll say "don't they know what they are talking about?" I said that during high contrast.. blah blah blah. I may have to convert this to rant. LOL

I think there will be 350 bokeh entries, more than half of which DNMC, and probably 180 of the after the game. I'll go for bokeh. Maybe I'll shoot it during a sporting event. ;~p

ahhh... perhaps a chance to redeem myself. The first time I didn't know what bokeh WAS... I just went off of the vague discription.

Now I know what it is... still not sure how exactly to do it... I'm thinking use my telephoto?

Any suggestions? Or leads to a tutorial or discussion on this?

Get a good Zeiss, Leica, Canon fast prime L, Nikon 85 f/1.4 and stuff like that. Because those lenses have good bokeh. It is not about shallow dof, circles (circles are one of the ways to judge the quality, whatever. It is about the quality/oof of the out of focus part of the pic. I hate these Bokeh challenges because it never is about bokeh, always shallow dof.

whats the difference between bokeh and shallow DOF? to my understanding, bokeh is achieved via shallow DOF, am i wrong to assume that?

confounded and confused,
