I'm going to be at a work thing in New Orleans from Tues, Nov 14 until Sun, Nov 19.

I don't have any work commitments on Tuesday, Nov 14, and was wondering if anyone had any touristy photo-op advice, or even wanted to hang out. My flight is supposed to arrive at 10:17am, and I'm staying at the New Orleans Marriott at 555 Canal Street.

I'm also free Wednesday morning, but I do have some work to do for a short while mid-afternoon. I can probably free myself up some nights, but business dinners tend to pop up without much warning.

Since you're going to be in the area, I would try the French Quarter. I know, I know...it is where everyone goes...however, I would concentrate on the buildings. I particular, doors, windows, and colorful walls. Lots of iron railings and other related items.

You can also concentrate on the "local" people. Some are very good subjects.

Walk over the the French Market. This is a very colorful "open air" market. Tons and tons of handmade products to shoot.

If you must, you can go to the river to see what's there, however, I've never gotten a good shot there!

You could hop over the the lower 9th ward for some flood shots but many have been done before and unless you're very creative, you may just get a bunch of "broken down flooded buildings".

Hope this helps.

I'd love to meet up with you, I'll try and see what I can do about work...

A few other things to shoot in New Orleans:

The Superdome. It's huge. There are a lot of cool shots to be had.

Also, the skyline. It's nothing spectacular, but if you wanted to get it, you could take the ferry to the westbank from the riverwalk.

I've never taken my camera to the river, but I would have thought you could get some pretty cool shots of the Mississippi and bridges. There's also the boardwalk/river walk where there are old paddle riverboats. And if nothing else, the riverwalk is a good place to get some great food. =]

The quarter is a great place to shoot. I've been meaning to get back down there myself. The side streets, the buildings, the shops, the people/vendors/street artists (not sure how many of those will be out on a Tuesday) are all great subjects. More really good food to be had here. =]

I'm not so sure about the french market anymore. I was there a few weeks ago, and it was more junky than normal... Mostly just people selling cheap stuff.

I got some pretty good (AKA P&S days) shots from the riverboat.

The aquarium was a worthwhile stop. The cemeteries are interesting-not sure if you would want to visit these alone.

The last time we were in New Orleans, we asked the cab driver how he liked living there. He showed us his pistol.

Yeah, we have both an amazing aquarium and zoo. They just take a lot of time to see...

I had forgotten about the cemetaries... They are definetely interesting.

I agree about the cemeteries, but be warned. The cemeteries historically have been an ideal location for muggers to rob tourists. People can get lost between the crypts, and dishonest hoods can hide between them and ambush whoever passes by. Go with at least one other person.

I would recommend several locations in City Park (the botanical garden, some of the marble structures near the creek, etc.) but I think that City Park has not recovered yet.

Since you are on Canal Street, I would recommend walking up to St. Charles St. and catching the streetcar out towards Audobon Park. There are great trees and houses out that way.

I was Google-Earthing the area a bit and see my hotel is very close the the Mississippi. Looks like there's a walkway (riverwalk you mention, I guess) along it over to what I think is the French Quarter/Market etc. I like cheap, junky stuff! :-D I want to make that my plan for the day (walk/shoot along the river & in the F-1/4), hopefully the weather will be nice for me.

Are you still headed down here next week? I can get off work at lunch (noon-ish) and meet up with you somewhere, if you're still wanting to shoot on Tuesday...

Yeah, who else wants to come out and play? =]

.

In addition to the aquarium that was already mentioned, if you can swing it, try going on one of those airboat tours. On those tours, you can photograph alligators, birds (egrets, etc.), and general "swamp" life. Finally, try to have a fast lens and go down to Bourbon Street at night--that's when the real photogenic folks come out. LOL! Up and down that street is safe; at night, just don't venture too far down empty side streets or where there are not a lot of people around.

Jackson Square is a cool place to shoot. When tired of shooting, head over to Cafe du Monde for some beignets and coffee (it's just across from Jackson Square)

Whew!...it seems that I'm offering advice to folks on various cities lately (Miami, New Orleans). Unfortunately, that's a testimate to how much I travel for my (non-photography-related) job. I do always try to bring my camera on all my business trips. I've been known to submit challenge entries from my travel shots.

Just keep an eye on your gear while you are there. Last weekend in New Orleans, my sis-in-law had her camera picked from her bag while at a restaraunt down in the Quarter. That was her first trip there and she had been saying what a great time and great shots she was getting. She had only had the camera for 2 weeks. :-(

It is a fantastic city though with LOTS to see.

That's pretty much true of any where you go with your camera...

tryals - Trey Ryals and I are meeting tomorrow (Tuesday Nov. 13) at:

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop noonish, all non psycho-killers are welcome. I have it on good authority (my brother-in-law, Bob) that this is "One of the coolest bars anywhere." And Bob has been to bars all over the world.

Will will form a plan of action there.

Whew. At first I read that as all non-psycho killers, and I was getting a bit worried. I'm better now, though. =] Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow, and would love to see any other DPCers that could make it.

I love New Orleans!!! Of course I haven't been there since Katrina. Of course as everyone mentioned the french quarter rocks. Most of the hotels have their own courtyard...so you have a cool one at the place you're staying. Also...if you can take the trolley....very cool!! AND...there's a "Margaritaville" and it's down by the water I believe!! Of course Jackson square and the huge cathedral. If you catch a trolley at canal it will take you down to the garden district....where all of the huge southern homes are....one of the large cemetaries is in the garden district too....they're closed on Sundays though! Talk about cool but spooky!!!

Oh...there is a little voodoo shop down in the quarter....check it out and grab your kids a dried out frog on a necklace for them! (yeah, lots of gross, weird stuff in there!)

HEy!!! There used to be a CAM at the cat's meow (karoke place). Here's the site for a couple of the CAMs in New Orleans...and you can watch them LIVE!! We can all watch you live at the Cat's Meow!! LOL Here's the site: New Orleans Bourbo Cams

Have fun and be careful!

PSTA: Also...if you get a chance to explore the cemetaries you may want to check out Cemetary #1 and visit the infamous Voodoo Prietess Marie Laveau's tomb.

Marie Laveau's House Of Voodoo - 714 Bourbon Street. Has been recommended to me. I'll get some stuff for my kids there for sure, they love that kind of stuff! :-)

Don't touch the shrine!! When we went in they were very adamant "Do NOT touch the shrine!!!"....was said several times...mind you there are people milling about in there and it's small and the shrine is just inside to the left.....they also have little sticky notes and signs buy the cash register saying, "Do NOT ask me where to get bad magic"...weird creepy stuff like that...you'll love it!! I think they also have some kind of fortune telling thing in the back room.

Man!!! I wish I could go!!!

I think Katrina caused a whole mess of trouble for her :-(

I assume Slippy is enroute to New Orleans at the moment. I just wanted to bump this one last time.

We are meeting at Lafitte's at noon, and would love to see anyone that can make it!

I made it. I just have to put my pants back on and I'm going to take a walk down Bourbon St. to Lafitte's. After getting 2 hours of interrupted sleep last night and spending the day on planes & in airports I sure am looking forward to a cold, carbonated beverage or two.

It doesn't look far on Google Earth, but I may end up aborting the walk part way and hopping a cab if it's too far.

11:20am central.

I didn't last too long until I needed a nap. Trey is a great host/tour guide (Thanks man!). I caught Trey trying to look inconspicuous while scheming to swipe a case of beer.
