Seems that you have things mostly figured out, but here is a link to a list of Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP. There is a "Clear Type Tuner" available that might help you.

If you already have adjustable settings for clear type, then check out the other programs they have. I use the Alt-Tab Replacement, Tweak UI, and Power Calculator, and they're all great.

Sounds like a driver problem to me. Have you downloaded and installed the correct new driver for that particular monitor model?

Here's a link from the Acer site for the Windows XP driver just in case:

This is from the US support site... couldn't get the global to open! The driver should be the same.
