Was scrolling through all the userNames today in case a User Name Challenge came up. Wow, over 50,000 names. But........ I'd bet that over half of them are inactive and probably a third are inactive and have never been used. Wonder why the inactive accounts are kept? Maybe a numbers thing for advertisers? I'm not talking about ones with pics, but those that have existed for a couple of years with no activity. There must be thousands of those. Wow. Wait til after the challenge to delete them. hehehehehehe I've found a few good ones!

The problem with deleting old accounts is that someone might come back after a long absence and want to start to participate again.

true but many have never done anything at all such as vote or submit and haven't loged in in a long time(i asume since we can't see that)

I agree, if you haven't logged in in 3 years, then your account should be erased. Better yet, if you haven't voted, commented, or have any uploaded photos, your account should be erased after one year of not logging in. If you have commented, voted, or uploaded then you're grace period is three years.

Let's clean up the list :)

I know of one account where the person signed up, left a comment that my photo was boring and has never done anything ever again. No more comments, no votes, no challenge entries. I guess my photo really inspired them.

Edit - oops, sorry, I just looked at his profile, he left 9 more comments two months later.

I created my account in sep,2002, but got my first digital camera in june,2004. I wouldn't have liked my profile being deleted because of inactivity

some other sites that offer free membership requires that their free members login to the site at least once every 3 months or the account will be deleted. I think this is fair, to weed out ghost or inactive accounts. Should a user decides to return a year later, he/she can always create a new account. What's the fuss?

Instead of just deleting inactive accounts how about just flagging them? If an account is flagged as inactive it simply doesn't show up in the list. When that person logs back in the account automatically becomes active again and is treated as such.

I think a big part of the problem with deleting accounts here is that they try very hard to maintain continuity in challenge results, etc. If you delete a person's account you orphan all their challenge entries, etc. I know they have deleted accounts in the past for "bad" people, but I imagine that's why they don't do it often.

Now if the person has never entered a challenge at all, then that's a different story, but even if they vote in only one challenge, then you orphan all their votes. I'm not sure how the system handles that. All and all, it seems like D&L set up the system to maintain a certain level of perminance.

Understandable. The quickest way is to keep challenge entries intact. Inactive account can still be deleted. Isn't this how it is currently done, by the way?

As Yanko suggested above about a flag feature, I think an even more useful feature would be to include a User Last Login date and timestamp on all user's Profile page.
