I'm going to be in Kansas City for a few days and I'm looking for must see places to shoot. Friday, Sat. and Sun., the 27th, 28th, and 29th I'll be at the Convention Center, only available after 7pm or later with no car and no tripod.

Monday the 30th though I am available from about 3-4pm until Tues. 5pm when I have to be back at Kansas City Airport. I'll have a car for these two days.

I'm from San Diego and I'm looking for something other than Buildings to shoot. We have plenty of those. I'm looking for things that we don't have here that would be easily driveable to. The more places I can hit on Tues, the better. Rivers are good because while we have the ocean, we don't have any rivers.

So what/where should I be planning to go to? Thanks in advance.

Crown Center Hyatt is where I'll be. In fact that building in your picture looks like the hotel on the backside from what they show on their web page.

Givemeashot contacted me. Thanks for the links to the others. Looks like it may be a productive business trip!

There are tons of fountains/statues at the Plaza check out danw791 picture "Fountain of Fury"...

Also Kauffman Gardens and there is an art museum that has giant birdies in front (see brizmama's post below)...

Oh and I have no idea where this statue is, my friend drove me to it to photograph for her...I wish it was a brighter day!
This was taken hand held from the ground...you might want a short ladder or something...you can't quite drive down to it...and watch out for the bums sleeping on/near it...they add a little extra flavor to the photo!

That's about all I know.

The "birdies" are at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. ( Near the Plaza)

Also if you drive out west in Kansas, there is lots and lots of uhhh flat lands and fields to take uhhh sunset photos of.

If your a butterfly guy, the Powell Gardens south on 71 highway is a neat place, though I am not sure if its still open this time of year. (doubt it)

Otherwise the Plaza can be pretty, sounds like your staying in a prime spot.

I am just about finished processing my last Convention Trips photos where I only had about 1 1/2 hours to shoot over two days. I managed to get over a dozen photos that *I* enjoyed for one reason or another.

The Point: Based on the early recommendations, it would seem that location wise I can shoot a bunch right where I'm at and The Plaza looks like a basic straight shot down Main St(?) from Crown Center which means I could take a bus.

So I'm wondering if I really need to rent a car for my one day off before I leave? It costs $9 to get back to the airport on a round trip shuttle vs. $55 for the car for a day plus $16 to park it in the hotel lot for the night.

Most of the spots we've mentioned you can get to by bus... Union Station and Liberty Memorial are right across the street from where you're staying.

Two more questions before I leave.

1. Is the Crown Center area safe to walk after dark with my camera?

2. Is there a must go to dinner place in that area where I can set some real KC BBQ? Preferably for about $10-15.

Thanks in advance.

Big thanks to Givemeashot for taking me around town today. And a shout out to Brizmama and Wavelength for meeting us at our final destination. Had a great time today. I have two more days here and this is a WONDERFUL city for some images. I'm pretty blown away having only lived in Southern California my whole life.
