Should I have submitted any of these two photos here or did I do well not to?

Dreams/Nightmares > //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=41393

Personally I would not have scored high on either one of them. The urban one is too gritty and noisy and there is no real sense of a building or such. But that's just me.

The Dreams/Nightmares one looks more like digital art than a picture, does not inspire a dream or a nightmare for me.

The second image is very strong. The abstract feel definately gives it a dream/nighmare feel to me, it is creepy to me and I am glad it was not a dream I have had.

They probably wouldn't have done well. Like mentioned, they feel more like art than photography. Not that photography can't be artistic!

the noise on the first shot doesn't bother me, i like it.

I would have actually liked the urban one for dreams. It's very surrealistic and dreamlike.

i actually like them both very much. you've managed to convey a sense of otherworldliness in both of the shots. as if you opened a connection to another dimension.

that said, on dpc, where clear, sharp and bright is king, they would not have done well :(

The dreams doesn't quite work, It could use just a bit more definition, imho.

I really like the urban one. the grain gives it a gritty urban feel.

The dreams/nightmares one I am more iffy on. I like the strong graphic image, but there's just not quite enough detail for me.

Here's a couple of my Urban outtakes:

I don't think they really fit the challenge as well as my entry, but I wanted to get some feedback. Please, let me know what you think.

I should point out that the urban shot 'Socked In' was taken at night and in thick fog (in nightframe mode). The result, naturally, is a grainy capture, in lieu of not having a shot at all.

I did feel, that since the only discernible objects in the picture were buildings, a 'real sense of a building or such' was assured.

On your last point, an 'artsy' feel, obviously was the aim of these pieces, as it is for almost everything I do and love, and I did use a digital camera to accomplish this. Digital art, as you may have meant to suggest here (?), could also describe something unduly overprocessed, which, I am sure, is not the case here. Both shots underwent adjustments to contrast/brightness and b and w conversion only, applied to the entire respective image only.

If in fact, you consider something 'art' or 'artsy', why would you not consider this a 'picure'? And... why (if you don't mind) does the second shot 'Luminous' not suggest a feeling of dream or nightmare to you?

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I have to admit, I am surprised to find positive comments on these (test) shots, given the treatment of similar entries to the challenges.

I'd like to invite further comments especially from those who are inclined toward a more negative evaluation, so that I may learn something about, what I still consider, the prevailing take.

spaz- i think all 3 of your shots have very nice lighting, what mostly appeals to me in the first one are the cracks in the sidewalk, what I don't like as much is all the parked cars (granted not easy to move them : ).
The second shot appeals to me for its emptyness and simplicity, good composition. The third I feel is a little too cramped, I would like to see more of one (maybe 2) of the subjects and maybe one of them in full, my suggestion would be the sculpture. just my thoughts.

I don't feel strongly about 1 and 3, Spaz, but 'Ramp' [above] appeals to me quite a bit. It's simple and empty enough to leave one wanting, which, IMO, is a great attribute to any capture.

To be critical, I'd consider revealing a lil more foreground detail (via added light here), if possible and desaturate minimally to achieve more subtle hues, which, IMO, would serve the nature of this shot.

To spasmo99. The first image "olddowntown", dosen't rally jump out at me. The second one "ramp", I feel, is a great shot. I love the simplicity of it. I really injoy the colors as well. The third image "wheel" I also enjoy very much. I like the prominent forground composition you used.
