Which version of Neat Image (or other noise reduction program) do you use and why?

Neat Image Pro, latest version, both the plug-in and the stand alone. Never used anything else and this seems to do what I want it to do very easily.

Noise Ninja Pro plugin... I like the level of control it has over Neat Image and also think it does a better job all around.

This comes from a guy that really hates noise reduction :-)

I use the "Pro" version of NeatImage, and I always use it as a plug-in, nearly always with masking to constrain the effect to the desired areas of the image.
Both Noise Ninja and NeatImage provide very good results. The user interfaces are quite different, and so there tends to be strong user preferences.

The only difference I see in the 2 pro versions is the ability to do 16 bit files. So does that mean that the Home Pro edition is good enough?

edit: nevermind - I see I would need the expensive one :) (of course)

When you say plug in do you mean a Plug in to PS? If so i would like to know how to get these plugins? On the web? or what not...

This can be used from within PS and PSE5 (which I just ordered).
To get the program, you have to buy it:

Do you find that these programs work well at high ISOs (800-1600 or more)?

Yes, very.

That is whne these noise reduction programs really shine. Also when you've cropped to a very small portion of the original image. The sharpness can still be there but the noise gets really bad. Neat Image has more than save a few images for me.

Could anybody tell me why, after putting my photos through neat image they come out gray-ish?

They dont all do this so I'm thinking that maybe its because it cant find a large enough uniform area in some photos (as it says) and this is a result of the quality issues that the little NI warning box warns about.

Any suggestions as to how to get around that?

Are there consequences in selecting a smaller area?

Thanks!

Never encountered your problem so far in NI. Try not to apply NI on a layer in a certain blending mode in PS (I hv encountered some issues a couple of times). On selecting a smaller area , not too much impact on noise reduction capability, but you have to be careful what area you select.

From what I've heard, applying too much noise reduction can result in a loss of contrast. Not sure I've seen that personally, but that's what I hear anyway.

Still undecided on if I want to purchase anything or if I just don't use it enough to matter.

If you generally don't have enough of a need to justify the purchase of NeatImage, PS has noise reduction built in. I think it's under the Filters menu (I'm not at a computer right now to verify).
