I was actually out on Cannon Beach this past month as well, but unfortunately it was actually on 9/30. So there was no time to submit. Too bad, I really like what I took and am fairly confident it would have done well.

So, I am happy to say that my submitted photo (5th challenge) was my best score so far at 6.0???. Someone made a comment that they would have liked to see the pic in B&W. It actually crossed my mind but I didnt do it. So, hind sight - did I make the right choice?

Two others that I had considered but didnt use (the first is too soft for my liking and the 2nd - well, I just didnt know how it would go. It's hard to see in the 2nd image but there is a plane in there - full image its easy to tell.

I really like this shot. Perhaps with a bit of sharpening.

Sometimes a centered composition works just fine, as it does in this case. The colors are wonderful. The ripples give a sense of motion and anticipation. Only possible negative for me is it may be oversharpened. Very nice image IMO. :-)

The aerobatics shot "cleans up" nicely; focus magic and curves gives me this:

I didnt think about doing much with that photo as I really thought it was too soft to mess with. I guess I was wrong.

Thanks!

Here's another step, with gradient added top, a hint of vignetting, and a contrast masking/brights layer set to soft light for more snap in the planes:

It's definitely a keeper if you work with the original :-)

Not really outtakes as much as the rest of the series - well, one outtake then...

Thanks to my wife for dyeing her hair and modeling, and my boys for helping me haul all this stuff out to the salt flats. It was a fun family outing.

Imagine the look on my relatives faces when I showed them the photos of the family Labor Day outing! :-)

OK DK, give us your vision on this, since I, for one, have missed it so many times. With the rest of the shots I see it as a commentary on the barren lifestyle of the '50s life (a la the neighbor's mother in American Beauty)...

I saw Posthumous's comment show up in my comments on the photo, but didn't realize this is where it came from - sorry if I'm late to the party!

I kind of hate to say what it means to me - I will say that I've been thinking lately about how futile so many of our pursuits in life are - we accomplish things but what lasting value do they have, have they made the planet a better place to live - stuff like that.

So I was thinking about the emptiness of materialism in general - and started rolling that "empty" word around in my head - and thought back to the Peas shoot on the Salt Flats and how empty it was there - and I got this VERY strong image of Jackie O sitting on that chair (that I had seen in an antique shop) on the salt flats.

Then the series came to me - empty in the kitchen, empty in the laundry room, empty in the bedroom, then a departure kind of shot that was different in orientation to make it stick out on the end of the series as it hung in an exhibition...

As to what it means? There are lots of layers of meaning in these to me - but whatever it means to you is what it means. It's the fun of art - I've really fallen for this kind of oddness that makes people think. I'm going to shoot more!

Next a naked pregnant woman riding down a sand dune on a dolphin with a sword in one hand as though attacking! ;-)
