Both look ok to me. The whole woman in the headwrap thing is pretty overdone at this point.

Had originally considered submitting this higher contrast version to the HCII challenge but decided to take advantage of the advanced editing to get rid of some of the distracting marks on the window which meant submitting to the Free Study.

oh yeah? well tell that to the middle eastern women who have to wear them... this was a tribute to my good friend Irum who lives that life every day...

Not saying people aren't done exploiting their situation to create a moody, evocative looking shot. Just saying that seeing them here, challenge after challenge, the effect has somewhat waned.

I was going back and forth over these 2 and came to the conclusion the outtake was not going to be to well received, but now I am not sure. I didn't think the harsh shadows would play well, but they are there to convey a feeling of the 50's.

Well, in my opinion you made a huge mistake - I would have rated your outtake at least one and probably two higher than your entry. Your outtake has both humour and a story in it - your entry is just a bride with some roses...

I had a bunch of comments about my aggressive Soft Focus, so here is my challenge entry and my original. Oh and routerguy, there was absolutely no use of any dodge and burn techniques, only agressive curves :-)

As you can see, there was a LOT of skin touch ups using healing brushes. Most of the rest of the image was done with curves and guassian blur.

Edit: Oh and there was no Neat Image used :-)

Haha. Really? Didn't know you could get that dodgy/glowy look with just curves.

You put enough curves layers on an image and you can get some wild results. I wish I had saved some of my failures when working on this image.

Here's what I entered:

Several people suggested I go for portrait instead of landscape. I didn't have any portait shots at that level as we were part of a tour group climbing to the spire. But I did get this one from the main floor.

Did I enter the right picture?

(Also, I shot the landscape freehand, while I was able to use the tripod for the portrait.)

Tough call, but let's just say I don't think you entered the wrong one.

I'm in agreement with Leroy.

Entered

Color Version-

I tend to think the b&W is still better, even after fiddling with the color version some more.

What do you guys think?

P.S. - Alain, dude! What were you thinking!?!?

BW. I gave you an 8 (7 probably for coloured one)

I was so upset at FSXIII as I thought that last day of September was on Sunday (not Saturday), and that I had all day Sunday to edit and pick my best shot. I had entered the literal 1st shot of the my session and it wasn't the greatest. When I logged on to the DPC that Sunday morning I had a big surprise. Oh well here are few that I would have chosen over my entry...

Here is my entry chezzy title and all...

more time for thumbnails now...

Not really outtakes as much as the rest of the series - well, one outtake then...

Thanks to my wife for dyeing her hair and modeling, and my boys for helping me haul all this stuff out to the salt flats. It was a fun family outing.

Imagine the look on my relatives faces when I showed them the photos of the family Labor Day outing! :-)

The last two of your outtakes (the bee ones) are IMO better than your entry. The other three are similar or not as good...

OK DK, give us your vision on this, since I, for one, have missed it so many times. With the rest of the shots I see it as a commentary on the barren lifestyle of the '50s life (a la the neighbor's mother in American Beauty)...

my outtake - I wasn't happy with the grasses on the left so went with the later sunset shot.

my entry

Hyperfocal, I really like your outtake4 the best of the shots you posted.

Yah, this is a killer good shot. I've taken the liberty of popping a quick curves adjustment on it to give a hint how it would look if you worked at making it richer tonally:

That's what I am seeing myself -- the lack of fulfilment in the life of a (stereo)typical 50's housewife.

Edit: Not sure stereotypical is the right word, it sounds a bit crtitical of the work --- which I don't mean it to be.

You commented on your "duck" picture that you couldn't find a crop that worked for you and the grasses were too distracting on the left. How about this square crop? I think that makes a pretty nice image...
