I started my photography hobby in April, and have been hooked ever since. I've been pretty busy, so haven't had a lot of time for other things, but the Leeds Film Festival is on at the moment, and I noticed that my interest in photography has completely transformed my appreciation of art-house films. Anyone else looking at film in a different way?

I am. Not Hollywood films tho, but European films, definatly. 'La Haine' has some great photography in it. Photography has really helped with my Media Studies A level, cos we're studying European cinema at the moment, and i'm like "that's a really cool shot" and everyone barr the teacher looks at me funny :P

Absolutely. I already had a keen interest in movies and using camcorders for my business, but still photography has fine-tuned my tastes.

If you want a tip for a great movie featuring a masterclass in cinematography then check out Amelie. It's brilliantly witty, excellently filmed and just superb from every other perspective - and you don't need to be 'into that kind of thing' to appreciate it. Here's a link to the trailer:

Also BTW, one of my favourite TV shows was Dream On using quick cuts of old movie footage interwoven with the present day stuff. It was hilarious and very creative.

Amelie has been a favourite of me & my other half for a while now!
So, how about hearing everyone's favourite art-house films?
I'm partial to anything by Zhang Yimou, 'Raise the Red Lantern' is one of his best.

Funny, I was going to mention Amelie when this thread started. Check out 'Burnt by the Sun' by Nikita Mikhalkov, if you can find it in the video store. It's beautiful.

Please check out Jeunet's other fantasic work: Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children. They are not quite as accessible as Amélie, but visually stunning. Alas, he is mostly responsible for Alien Resurrection (obvious in some of the casting however), but made up for it with Amélie.

I agree with this. And yes, Amelieis a great and beautiful film!
And what about Krzysztof Kieslowski? The trilogy of Bleu, Blanc & Rouge is fantastic. Rouge and La Double Vie de Veroniqueare my favs from him.

That's great bobster!

Something worth noting on a well shot film, is the fact that on every frame or scene you can pause and think 'my god that would be a great photo'

Same rules apply.

I really didn't get on with 'The City of Lost Children', but maybe that's because I watched it on a DVD which only gave the option of watching it dubbed... not with subtitles. I can't stand dubbed films. Watch out for this if you're planning on watching a dvd of this film, it comes in 2 versions.
Jon, yeah... some of the films I've been watching this week were incredible... every single frame would have been a winning photo! Makes me sick!
On the other hand, there have been films that have struck me as 'weak'... I wouldn't have been able to put my finger on it before, but they are photographically not well thought out. This is a shame when the screenplay is good.

Probably my favourate movie that i have seen in a long time is Amores Perros (//www.lionsgatefilms.com/amoresperros/html/, it is a great Mexican movie.. much better than the recent Y tu mama tambien..

And keeping on the latin theme.. City of God is amazing.. well worth the effort

I much prefered 'Y tu mama tambien'... but the first segment of Amores Perros is great.
On a vaguely related note, I went to see 'Once upon a time in Mexico' recently... don't bother, it's awful!
I haven't seen 'City of God' yet, but I have seen another film directed by one of the film's producers, called 'Central Station'. Great film, about an obnoxious orphaned kid trying to find his father and the woman who takes him on the journey across Brazil to find him.

I was searching for something else in the forums and come across this thread again. I thought it was a good place to mention Zhang Yimou's recent film, Ying xiong (or Hero or Nameless). Go see this film.
