Hi everybody,

I’m thinking of buying a 7D and I remember seeing posts mentioning some concerning focus, flash and other problems, some of them solved by firmware update (1.01).
Thus, I will appreciate your input on any unresolved problems and low light focusing performance (I’m looking at shooting under street light and indoors [40-300W bulbs], considering a Minolta 28-75 D f2.8).

Thanks in advance

P.s: Is it possible to check shutter actuations somewhere in the menus? (the camera has been used and I’m trying to figure out how much)

1. I haven't had any problems wih focusing, flash, etc on mine and I never saw a post about anyone else having any problems you mentioned.
2. After looking around, I found these reviews on that KM 28-75 your considering. While I have no personal experience with it, the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 does get slightly better reviews and mine is slowly becoming my lens of choice.
3. I looked through the manual and found nothing telling you how to check the actuations of the camera. You may get some answers by calling Sony (KM was bought by them). I'd like to know myself.

Just curious. Not knowing how much your paying for the 7D, have you looked into the 5D or Sony A100?

Hi Eddi,

Thank you very much for your quick response. It seems there are only a couple of us left under Minolta’s flag ;).

1. The problems I was referring to (it might have been on dpreview forums, not sure) were backfocus, some flashes firing at full power occasionally, camera freezing on timer exposures etc.
2. Up here (Canada) I can get the Tamron at cdn$599 (us$500) while Minolta is on sale for cdn$449.

Regarding A100, the high ISO noise is keeping me away. Also, the plasticky feel along with the high price on Sony lenses and other accessories are hard to get over.
As for the 5D, I couldn’t find one in Canada and to buy it online from US is too much of a hassle - shipping + customs duties,/taxes makes it expensive.
Few weeks ago I’ve lost the chance to buy the 7D kit for 599 at walmart.com. Now I found a 7D used for cdn$850 (us$740), including a 1-year full in-store warranty and I’m tempted to go with it. I know it’s a bit pricey for a 6 MP but for the same price here I can only get a 350D, D70 and Pentax. I hear good things about Pentax K10D … still waiting for some sample images to see if it’s worth waiting.

There you go. I looked at Nick's portfolio and saw some nice stuff. But, if it doesn't feel right in your hands. By all means, don't buy it. I'm not ready for another camera yet. But, when I am, I will be checking out the A100 (or whatever the flavor of the month is), the 5D (which is smaller, though almost like the 7D), or any other camera that will fit my lenses.

I've shot 10, 8 and 6 second exposures with NO problems while in NYC last month. As I said, I hadn't read anything, or experienced for that matter, about backfocusing or flashes firing at the 'wrong' power setting.

Adrian, you know the A100 takes Minolta bayonet mount lenses, right? So ,the Tamron 28-75 KM mount would fit. You're not limited to Sony lenses.

Do keep your eye on the Pentax.

While you're at it, have a browse at B+H for their lens lists.

Some yummy fun there...

Sony burned a lot of bridges with that High ISO noise... totally inexcusable for a CCD manufacturer IMHO.
