I know this is a long shot but does anyone have a clue where this stadium is? I would love to find it so I could find out who the "huge" man stepping onto the track is. I know it will be like finding a needle in a haystack but it should prove interesting!!! All P.I.'s are welcome!

where ever it was, they were speaking english, because the big white sign on the right side reads "gate 30", or so it would seem...

Off the top of my head I don't really have a specific location. But guessing by the clothing and the appearance of the stadium I would bet that it is Eastern US, Large University. Yea, I know- could I get more specific. But this is why I think that; My guess on the clothing is that at the latest this is the late 1940's- probably earlier- Back then most of the large stadiums were at universities and the big ones were in the eastern US. Plus, this appears to be set up for track as well as football- I don't believe any of the "pro" stadiums at the time served that dual purpose.

I could be wrong.....

I've been following the same reasoning, except that the Midwest also had a lot of big stadiums then, and there are/were a few of that vintage in the West as well. So far, no luck...

Yea, I should've mentioned that I'am in Western Colorado, so the Mid-West is also Eastern US to me.

USC played in the LA Coliseum, UCLA's stadium had entrances that combined with the stairs, not coming out of the middle of the seating areas. I had to go back to my old Jackie Robinson book for the details on UCLA. It strikes me as a very 20's design.

I just googled old stadiums and didn't see anything that resembles this. I would be willing to bet this stucture no longer stands.

Almost looks like it could have been a military complex of some kind at one point.

1923, I think. Stanford Stadium and University of California, Berkeley both predate it by a little bit on the West coast. Stanford's was built in 4 months, incidentally, a rather stunning statistic :-)

You beat me by two minutes. I had just got the image to come up on Google and saw the two concrete "towers"

My best guess is the stadium in Berlin for the 1936 Olympics.

I wonder if Photosynth will be able to help indentify that structure?

I tryed to find shotputters and discus throwers in the 1940s but nothing much. That would be my guess as to what he compeated in. But maybe I should look in yr.s before 1940s. Ohio does look simular.Good P.I. work!

Scalverts got it. It is most certainly Ohio State. The two concrete mounds and the layout of the stadium are just too dead on for it not to be.

Although my research shows that the large gentleman is actually Unger Ingersvenson, a Swedish Exchange student- Bob was ill the day this shot was taken.

You might be able to contact Ohio State Athletics and send them a scan of the image. They might be able to provide you with more information, maybe not a name but something that could get things moving forward. Ohio State is large enough that they probably also have a official historian (I was blown away to find out my little school had one)

But the Gate 30 think probably shoots the Berlin thing out of the water.

Now if the timeframe for the building in the background can be figured out???

If this was around the time of the 1936 olympics Jesse Owans might be in the back-ground!!!! Wouldn't that be something special!
