I will sell you my first generation TiVo with lifetime service for 200 bucks.

I don't think I could live without a DVR anymore.

Dont have the $, but just out of curiosity , could someone replace the HardDrive in your tivo to have more recording time?

just get a cheap tuner card for your computer and set it to record, never understood why people pay monthly DVR fees

Who knows what non-subscription options are out there to record over-the-air HD?

Yes it could be done. There is a company that will do it for you if you want as well. Some software has to be loaded on it.

I have a media center PC and it is not as good as a regular DVR IMO. It can work through my xbox360 but just seems to be a pain in the ass.

Sorry I don't. My HD comes through cable and the box has a DVR. Have you checked into some of the newer video cards with tuners?

Are there any tuner cards out there that allow you to watch more than one program at a time, anyone know?

Does your cable company not offer a DVR? Mine is only like 6 bucks per month and has dual tuner so I can record two shows at once and watch a third live if I want.

They do, and they are backed up on orders/installations-- I called a few weeks ago and got put on a waiting lidt, they said it could be 6 weeks, :(

And ours if 15 bucks a/month-- that seems kinda high huh

Well that may be normal. We live in a small town and many things are cheaper. Our cable internet is only 35 when it was over 40 when we lived in Tampa.

No, they have a DVR. $10/month, which is very reasonable. however, I only have basic basic cable (read $17/month) and get all my HD over the airwaves. Thus to get the DVR I also need to get the $45/month upgrade to my service. So the DVR is (to me) $55/month...

It seems like several of the networks are putting full episodes of their shows online for free. I know CBS is doing it with Survivor, ABC put the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy online... look around. :)

Are there any other options other than tivo and cable supplied dvr?

Yes, and they are going to be expensive too. This card allows you to record one show while watching another. I don't think there will be cards that do much more than this though, it's probably the limit of TV tuner cards at this point, I could be wrong about that though, not entirely sure.

Edit to add: Although, couldn't you theoretically just have say, 5 TV tuner cards in your computer and run them all at once? As long as they each have their own cable, wouldn't that work?

Yes, use a TV tuner card and your PC. With the right software, it should work just like a Tivo or any other DVR would. It's probably much more of a pain to set up and use, but it'll do the job and there aren't any monthly fees for it.

Sony has a HD DVR I found for $550 with a 250GB (30 hours HD) hard drive for OTA signals.

Most certainly. You can even buy pre-built systems with 10 or more cards in them.
