How much to charge?

Yeah that’s always the burning question but here’s the score, I bought quite a bit of kit (dream kit basically) with a portion of redundancy money several months ago, because like most we all want to try and get some return from our hobby or take it further this has lead me onto the task of being hired to work with some of the europes best medieval jousting stuntmen and actors. I have already given this company 15 free images as a gift, i.e. showing them what I am capable of.

Here are the shots I gave them already:

I met them a couple of times whilst shooting some stock photography and had a chat with them, I did state I could get some really interesting shots given access to the arena and not have kids running around my feet and keeping an eye out for a member of the public hijacking my camera bag. So I have now been asked what my rates are, bearing in mind I will be travelling a couple of hours away and cost of fuel being £40-£50, I will then have to edit the shots and also want a small percentage back to cover what I have spent on goodies in the last few years. It’s the typical I don’t want to over charge whilst not wanting to undersell myself… this will be my first paid assignment.

As a realistic figure what would you charge?

Really not sure what you should charge. I take it they are a commercial outfit and charge entry hence should be able to afford commercial rates? Probably a good idea to give them three options - they will probably go fot the middle one....

I like your website - very shmick....

Wow...what an absolutely fantastic event to cover. I remember years ago I sold one of my horses to a jousting team. A beautiful feisty black thoroughbred. I never did get a chance to see him in action...a shame really.

As for the charging price...list all your costs and then work out your profit percentage on top. Then work around this price.

Thanks,

I will do a combo of both of these and see what works, there quite friendly and like what they have had so far so as long as I don't give them ridiculous prices im sure it'll work out okay :0)

Thanks for the comments on the website too, its a combination of my new one with the old one thrown in here and there for faster picture viewing.

I'll come back with an update as to what happens or more shots from when I do it...

since it's your first time, why not simply ask them what they normally pay. if it sounds reasonable, take it. if it's too low, ask for a little more. at this point, it's more important to start building a professional portfolio than anything else.

I have been to a few of these events and although they attract a fair few people I don't think that they make much of a profit when you consider what their expenses must be (which is a shame because they are great fun, you'd think they would be packed)

So I do wonder how much they would have available to spend on things like advertising/photography.

I would probably suggest coming up with a fee for a days shooting rather than per image, but make sure don't sell yourself short, for the kind of work you have in mind you would be working well before the event opened to the public so I would think a very early start and a late finish.

I would be happy to do the first job for a realatively low fee, on the understanding that you can use the images for your own purposes, just to see how things pan out. If you get bags of stuff and they are pleased with your results then the next job could pay more.

When I started taking shots for a local company I did the 1st job for free and have slowly charged more and more over the years in relation to my experience and output, but beacuse they got such a good price in the begining they kept coming bakc to me. Now they pay more because they know what they are getting
