I’ve just come back from a 2 week holiday in Russia and I must say it is one amazing place for photography. Life there is so full of contrast, the cities and villages are photography goldmines. There is so much beautiful architecture there, you can almost point your camera in any direction and you’ve got a decent photo! I took something like 5000 photos in two weeks and now I have to sort through them all for the best ones to process.
People love having their photos taken there and almost jump at you to take one. I have three pics ready of a young Russian girl called Katja in my portfolio. She’s 21 years old and lives in Ufa in Bashkortostan which is near the Ural Mountains. I have deliberately blown out the features a little to put more emphasis on the eyes. What do you think?

Excellent work! It was made easier by the model you had I'm sure. She is a gorgeous girl. I liked #1 the best.

I'm jealous. I went to Russia 13 years ago and have been dying to go back ever since. I'd really love to see how it's changed, as the Russia I visited was part of the Soviet Union. I'm still proud of the pictures I took when I was there.

Are you sure, here are nobody from Russia?
What ever, I am from old Soviet Union - Estonia. And I know one person more here, who is Estonian.
I bought my camera a month ago, it means, not very experienced.

I have been to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus on several occasions and loved it every time. What is very striking in these coutries is that everything looks and seems there fairly familiar (people, architecture, etc.) but it all really is truly exotic.
The people and welcoming and generous, the countryside, the industrial complex (often in shambles) and the chaotic way of doing things over there are inspiring and certainly photogenic.

How did you store all those images? Are there a lot of opportunities to get a Microdrive and such burned to a CD (esp. St. Petersburg)? I'll be off to St. Petersburg in about two and a half weeks and I don't want to be limited to the memory I have with me. (340 to 1400Mb)

It certainly helps that she is attractive, but.. Kiwi, you have depicted her beautifully in the first image! An amazing shot, with art to boot.

Hey Az, I took my lap top with me and loaded everything onto that. I was looking into getting one of those x-drives but I still wanted to work on some photos and sort them out a little so the laptop worked out fine.
I only had my IBM Microdrive card with me and it worked out fine. Take pics all day and upload in the evening.
If you want any tips about St. Petersburg just ask okay. And you'd better like to drink vodka :-)

Nice work Gary. They have an almost angellic quality to them. I'm assuming you shot jpegs rather than raw.... I'm on a bit of a mission at the moment about jpegs v raw. I heading out west to the Rockies next week and am torn between shooting raw, which will give me the ulitmate flexibility and jpeg which will give more images. I'm going to take a laptop with about 10Gb of free space so hopefully that will suffice.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your stuff from your trip.

Hmm, I hesitate to take a laptop with me in fear of it being stolen.

This is what I'm using (20gb) but it is not cheap either.
The 20gb model sells for $484. on the net. I paid somewhat less locally.
It works great! Rechargeable battery or AC.
I just downloaded the new firmware update to handle Canon CRW files.

very attractive model, gary - esp in the first picture
are you still using the Auto FX Dream Suite filters to get that characteristic, glowing diffusion look?
I may have to look into those filters - they do a GREAT job!
