Hi guys

I've had a few comments on a couple of my pictures about them being pixelated.

I can't see what I would have called pixelations - I am assuming that pixelation is when you can see the image pixels being greater in size to the display pixels, leading to a "blocky" effect.

Am I right?

Actually I don't see any such effect, and wouldn't expect to at 8Mpixels and not cropping much of the image before resizing down for DPC.

However, I do suffer terribly when I have to compress for jpeg down to sub-150k.

It is at this point that I think most of the damage is done. I usually either have to save it to something like 165k or 115k, and at 115k smooth gradients get really lumpy, and I think this maybe what people are referring to as pixelated.

1) can anyone confirm my understanding of "pixelated"
2) can anyone suggest how I can get under the mandatory 150k without having to go down to almost 100k and suffer compression issues on gradients

Hoping you can help

Steve

Example photo?

What editing software do you use? In photoshop, the difference between 150k and 115k is very signifigant in terms of jpeg compression.

In Photoshop, "save for web" allows you to specify desired file size and it will get as close to that as possible without exceeding it. When you use "save as" you are given a limited number of choices, and sometimes it's a big step from one to the other. Also, "save as" appends EXIF data to the jpg, causing it actually to exceed the file size it is saved as. For example, if you "save as" exactly 150k, the file size will be slightly over 150K and it will be rejected as a challenge entry. With "save for web" the EXIF is stripped, and the file size you see is the file size you get.

Hey guys

...sorry for not getting back to you, I was looking out for email notification but one never came so I assumed nobody had replied (I've either got it set up wrong or I missed the emails).

Great answers! Yes, I use photoshop elements 4.0

The differences between "Save for web" and "Save As" sounds really significant. This must be my problem, since I have been consistently using "Save As".

Thanks for your help

Steve
