I was craving more reach last year and had to decide between the Canon 100-400 zoom or the 400 prime. I eventually decided to go with the prime because of the slight bump in optical quality. The 400mm is a fantastically sharp lens and I've used it extensively for both astronomical and conventional applications. It's huge, really needs a tripod (no suprise there) but I've never seen it take a bad picture. I was shooting this weekend at an asian dance performance outdoors and got some incredible candids. Superb lens.
