Hello I am new here and sorta new to photography. I just got some lighting equipment and am using stuff like it for the first time. I was wondering if this would count as Low-Key.

I would like to know before I try to shoot my model. Also is there anything I can do to improve these other than finish painting the walls?

i'd say it's low key but also underexposed. ie. the overall tones are low-key, but there's no true highlights. to me a good low-key image still offers some highlights.

underexposure also limits details. that's apparent when you bump up the contrast in the second version.

try the same shot again with a longer exposure if possible. i'm not sure what you can and can't do on your cam.

Yeah, that's low key... there's a forum thread on it as well as a challenge on Low Key if you want some examples. My challenge entry was also underexposed.

best to expose strongly and make your blacks black later... it's always easier to decrease detail, but not always easy to increase it... if you have well exposed lit areas, you will have a good pic.

Low key appears to be defined by a dark picture only lit by a single source side light or something with that appearance...

This is low key. It's a bit under-exposed and the highlight areas don't really add to the "portrait". The poit of lowkey generally is to emphasize shape of the subject. You're sort of getting that here, but the angle could be better.

Generally, lowkey is not high-contrast at all. This isn't what most consider lowkey photography, because of the high-contrast. Lowkey (as well as highkey) is almost always low to normal contrast.

Yes, that is more along the lines of low key, especially in the model's face.

Notice how the light emphasizes the shape of her face. That is the goal of low-key lighting - to emphasize shape.

When you go to post process this, try to clone/heal the hot spot on the forhead and then post the highlights just a bit with levels or curves.

Edit to add: might want to burn that bright spot on her cheek too.

I like it! Maybe you could have a variation by using a custom white balance to that orange light. That would give it a more true white tone which may be interesting.

Ok how did I do for my first time using the burn tool. I usually use photoshop to create digital art and not for phot editing so i am kinda new to it. So here is my revised one. Be harsh I can take it.
