Just read that Devon & David, son & father team just took several ribbons in the Utah State Fair. Congrats! And one was from the DPC GTG in Moab last spring.

So let's hear from everyone else who has won ribons in your state fairs this year.

I'll start;

Last year in the Texas State Fair I took one ribbon and just got the letter that this year I got another one. Not bad, two ribbons for three photos entered.

Some day I'll catchup with those Utah guys!

I didn't win any blues at the Maryland State Fair this year. In the last four years, I've entered both my county fair and the state fair. In the previous seven, I've won at least one blue. The streak is over. At this year's state fair, I entered 10 photos, and got 2 seconds, 2 thirds and a fourth. This followed the county fair, where all nine of my entries ribboned - 5 firsts (including champion & reserve champion), 2 seconds, 1 third and 1 fourth.

My youngest daughter, Amanda (13), took a second at the state fair on a photo that didn't even place at the county fair.

My oldest daughter, Kris (16), took a fourth in photography at the state fair with a photo that placed second at the county. She also took two seconds for fine art at the state fair. At the county fair in fine art, she took 5 firsts (including champion & reserve champion) and 1 second.

My wife, Donna, entered one photo at the state fair, and for some reason didn't win anything.

Here's all (but one) of our entries and the results from both fairs. (and links to previous years results):

Congrats Devon, I'd love to see your winning pic posted. Hey, you get a real ribbon too, (we admire virtual ribbons a whole lot but a real live colorful ribbon to show your family and friends is way cool).

David, you must be proud, you and your son can share such an amazing journey everytime you look through a camera lens together. WTG on your own Utah State Fair jackpot. It's all in the family.

Sheesh...I *hate* to brag. This year was the first year that I entered photos in county or state fairs. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised to receive 1st Place, Best in Show, and Howard County Champion for one of my shots at the county level (also three 2nd places and two 3rd places). At the Maryland State Fair I also received 2 1st place ribbons (each of those also received "Special Awards"). I was also thrilled that someone is interested in purchasing a print of one of my submissions. It certainly will be difficult for me to even come close to matching this year's success next year...

Here, I'll post the images so that they are easier to see. (please, don't let me be the only one - everyone else can jump in too!)

My son's ribbons:

Wildlife, 1st place:

Female Portraiture, 1st place:

Flowers, 2nd place:

And my one and only ribbon:

Scenic, 4th place:

At our Mountain State Fair (which is different from the NC State Fair -- the mountain counties are so far away from Raleigh, they let us have our own "regional" thing), I got a blue for

or a shot very similar to it. When I went to process the one for the fair, I couldn't remember exactly what I had done for this one, and did not have time to figure it out.

and a red for

Both of these were in the "professional class" because they define professional as someone who makes any money from photography, or anyone who is involved in instructing photography.

I can't enter the county fair, because they use the same definition, and they don't have a pro class.

Which special awards did you win? Was it that Anna Troyer thing? I still haven't figured out exactly what that is. I also had a "call me, I'd like to purchase this photo" note. My daughter had one on a drawing a couple years ago.

Yes, one was the Anna Troyer award (and I don't know exactly what it is, either) and the other was a large purple rosette which simply says "Special Award." I'm wondering if the same person expressed an interest in purchasing our photos, as I noticed one of your submissions was also of Concord Point Lighthouse (mine didn't ribbon).

Kelly H. from Havre de Grace?

I would imagine that the purple rosette would be a champion ribbon. I've won champion ribbons at the state fair before and they are big purple rosettes. You did well. The competetion was tough this year. Please, show us the pics you entered.

These are the two shots that ribboned at the Maryland State Fair

This one received a blue ribbon for 1st place, and the Anna Troyer Special Award (whatever that is!).

This shot also received a blue ribbon for 1st place, and a "Special Award" (Champion)ribbon.

Larry, it looks like we have different buyers after all. My buyer is from Baltimore and wants to give a print to his wife for their 1st wedding anniversary as they were married at the lighthouse. Congrats to you on your sale, and ribbons!

I was very impressed by the number of high quality shots submitted to the fair (in fact, I was a bit intimidated by it) as well as the high number of submissions (over 700, I believe).
