I am going to a Jazz Festival over the weekend. Cameras are allowed but flash is not. The Stage is under a big white circus style tent however the sides are open. most of the acts will be during day light hours with exception of headlining acts which it will be dark for. will have light flooding in from the sides during the day time.

I am going to be taking my D200

Should I take my tamron 90mm or my 28-300 both is not really an option as i want to travel lite.

the 90mm is my fastest lens which would probably do better without a flash but then my focal range is very limited.

also any suggestions on ISO white balance etc? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can tell you now f/6.3 isn't going to do you much good.

90 2.8 is your best bet.

What lighting will there be for the evening acts? I'm sure there will be some spotlights on the performers at least.

Wow, you consider carrying two lenses as 'travelling heavy'!

Even traveling light I have about 5 lenses in by bag LOL.

If the majority of your shots are going to be taken in daylight I would go for range over speed (perhaps use a monopod if you have one?). Although the 90mm is faster, if you are forced to shoot from distance then the 90mm is gonna really restrict the kind of shots you can take.

As for W/B, shoot RAW and leave the whitebalance to auto, you can't go wron then

If you can shoot between 400 to 1600 iso i'd be taking the 28-300, shoot in raw and don't worry about the white balance. The 28-300 will give you more options and if you can get up close to the stage you should get some great shots. Be bold and see if you can even sit on the edge of the stage you may find that the muso's will work to your camera.

Take some big memory! and shoot fast (1/200th +)

i'd listen to deepee and ralph, personally... sure the 90mm will feel restrictive, but you have feet. zoom with them. ;)

actually, on second thought, i'd run to my local camera shop and drop the $100 for the nikkor 50mm 1.8 and use that, especially if you wanna travel light...

There will be a full light show, but because it is smooth jazz the lighting is usually dim to give that jazz club feel.
