I just got this emailed to me, and I thought I'd share it, especially since many people in these forums live in places where murder and rape is a common occurrence. I'm not sure if they're 100% the best thing you can do, but they seem better than just panicking and letting it happen to you.
(Just thought I'd also say that DPChallenge doesn't endorse these, so don't sue them if they don't work.)
Do these sound like reasonable things to do in case of emergency?
Because of recent abductions
in daylight hours,refresh yourself
of these things to do
in an emergency situation...
This is for you,
and for you to share
with your wife,
your children,
everyone you know.
After reading these 9 crucial tips ,
forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful
in this crazy world we live in.
1 Tip from Tae Kwon Do :
The elbow
is the strongest point
on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans.
If a robber asks
for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM .
Toss it away from you....chances are
that he is more interested
in your wallet and/or purse
than you,
and he will go
for the wallet/purse.
RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown
into the trunk of a car,
kick out the back tail lights
and stick your arm out the hole
and start waving like crazy.
The driver won't see you,
but everybody else will.
This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency
to get into their cars after shopping,
eating, working, etc.,
and just sit (doing their checkbook,
or making a list, etc.
DON'T DO THIS!)
The predator
will be watching you,
and this is the perfect opportunity
for him to get in
on the passenger side,
put a gun to your head,
and tell you where to go.
AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR ,
LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
a. If someone
is in the car
with a gun
to your head
DO NOT DRIVE OFF,
repeat:
DO NOT DRIVE OFF!
Instead gun the engine
and speed into anything,
wrecking the car.
Your Air Bag will save you.
If the person is
in the back seat
they will get the worst of it .
As soon as the car crashes
bail out and run.
It is better than having them
find your body
in a remote location.
5 A few notes about getting
into your car in a parking lot,
or parking garage:
A.) Be aware:
look around you,
look into your car,
at the passenger side floor ,
and in the back seat
B..) If you are parked next to a big van,
enter your car from the passenger door .
Most serial killers attack their victims
by pulling them into their vans
while the women are attempting
to get into their cars.
C..) Look at the car
parked on the driver's side
of your vehicle,
and the passenger side.
If a male is sitting alone
in the seat nearest your car,
you may want to walk back
into the mall, or work,
and get a guard/policeman
to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS
take the elevator
instead of the stairs.
(Stairwells are horrible places
to be alone
and the perfect crime spot.
This is especially true at NIGHT!)
7. If the predator has a gun
and you are not under his control,
ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you
(a running target)
4 in 100 times;
And even then,
it most likely
WILL NOT
be a vital organ.
RUN,
Preferably !
in a zig -zag pattern!
8. As women,
we are always trying
to be sympathetic:
STOP
it may get you raped,
or killed.
Ted Bundy,
the serial killer,
was a good-looking,
well educated man,
who ALWAYS played
on the sympathies
of unsuspecting women.
He walked with a cane,
or a limp,
and often asked
"for help"
into his vehicle
or with his vehicle,
which is when he abducted
his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:
Someone just told me
that her friend heard
a crying baby on her porch
the night before last,
and she called the police
because it was late
and she thought it was weird.
The police told her
"Whatever you do,
DO NOT
open the door."
The lady
then said that
it sounded like the baby
had crawled near a window,
and she was worried
that it would crawl
to the street
and get run over.
The policeman said,
"We already have a unit on the way,
whatever you do,
DO NOT open the door."
He told her that they think
a serial killer
has a baby's cry recorded
and uses it to coax
women out of their homes
thinking that someone
dropped off a baby
He said they have not verified it,
but have had several calls
by women saying that
they hear baby's cries
outside their doors
when they're home alone
at night.
DO NOT
open the door
for a crying baby ----
the Crying Baby theory
was mentioned on
America 's Most Wanted
this past Saturday
when they profiled
the serial killer in Louisiana.

I've heard from an FBI agent that if someone has a gun and is trying to abduct you, you should run.
His reasoning was this: A moving obejcet is hard to hit with a handgun. Most untrained gunners have less than a 25% chance of hitting you. AND, if you substain a bulltet wound the chances of it being fatal are near 5%.
If however, you are lured into a closed space, your chances of survival are near zero.
Pretty much the same as your #7, but my numbers are a bit higher.

An excellent post.
I was raised, along with my sister, by our dad - who was always concerned about teaching us to protect/defend ourselves. We took self-defense classes, karate, etc.... The main thing I learned that was so consistent is RUN AND SCREAM. I know how to remove a person's eyeballs with 8 pounds of pressure! lol
I had a chance to use my training about 10 years ago when I had a 'Peeper'. He was relentless and caught at my windows MANY times...it really changed the way I do everything now, but my instincts were good at the time and I'm glad I knew what to be worried about and how to react.
To this day my windows are covered at dusk and only opened after dawn - but its my way and works for me.
We girls MUST be careful. I teach my 2 daughters the same way I was taught.. watch everything and be aware.

I worked at a bar at the time. And th next day after it happened, I was opening the bar and my boss walked in on me and I pulled a knife on him... LOL

My father was a cop in New Orleans...
...he always told me to "not talk to strangers" and ...
...if someone grabs you to "fight and yell like hell"...
...if they succeed in getting you in a car, continue to fight like hell..grab them...grab the stearing wheel...wreck the car NO MATTER WHAT...if the perp gets you alone you are likely dead...
...I passed this along to my two girls...

Yes it has and not once have I heard it being disproved. The best advice is to keep your wits together. And let your fear and adrenaline work for you instead of against you.

I've also been robbed at knife point by two men, but managed to get away. It happened in the subway in NYC and I had to jump down a flight of 6 or 7 steps to get away. Luckily, I have fast feet and didn't break any bones in my escape.
I don't live in NYC anymore, but to this day I carry a loud referees whistle on me just in case. While I haven't had to use it for robbers or muggers, I have had to use it while on my bicycle when approached by street dogs, and it works great for that. I think all women should carry whistles with them by hanging them on their neck and under their blouse. It's then easy to get it out when needed and sometimes easier to blow the whistle then to scream, which may not be as loud. |

I got robbed at knife point once. I grabbed the knife and punched the guy in his face a few times. Then I kicked him once he was on the ground so he wouldn't get up. I then called 911.

That whole van parked next to the car thing freaks me out. If I go to my truck and there's a big white van parked next to my door, I get worried. I couldn't imagine how women would feel in that situation.

If something doesn't look right, you should just call for help or go back into wherever you were (or the closes place that people are) and call a friend or whatever it is that you think will make you safe.

On that note...ever see one of those COPS shows where they show someone at semi close range shooting at someone...most of the time no one ever gets shot. I find that really weird. I've even seen (on TV) cops in shootouts within 20 feet of another guy just firing rounds at eachother and no one gets shot.
Anyway, yeah if it came down to it, I'd start screaming like a little baby. No one wants to kidnap or rob someone that keeps screaming and strugling. Not to mention, if I was a lady or being abducted by a gay perv, I'd rather be shot and killed in a parking lot than kidnapped, and tied up in some sicko's basement for the next 5 years.

side note in relation to deapee's comment:
Handgun self defense courses center on 21 feet. 21 feet is your safety zone, if someone is closer than 21 feet then you are in danger (assuming they are dangerous / mean you harm).
Anyway, seeing people who haven't practiced shoot at something 21 feet away should make you all feel better about running away from a person with a handgun - most people who have not practiced are lousy shots.
Hitting something at even moderately close range when adrenaline gets flowing - not easy at all. Now start moving the target - even harder.
Most punks aren't willing to put the time commitment in practicing shooting enough to be good. Most people aren't, either. Blanket statement, that last - but it does say "most", not "all".

He's exactly right.
Please don't argue politics with me in this thread, but I believe that a woman's best defense is to carry a firearm. Most states now allow a concealed carry permit which lets you carry a gun in most any public area in your purse or elsewhere. Defense training courses are cheap and very effective, and many women have stopped a rape simply by materializing a firearm during the attempt. Men view women as weak victims; you can change that.
Visit packing.org to find out if your state allows concealed carry and what it takes to get the permit.
Visit A Human Right if you are very unsure as to whether carrying a firearm is the right choice for you.

My brother has been target shooting and hunting for years with a rifle. He's a really good shot with a rifle. Can easily nail a dear at 100 yards.
He can't hit the broad side of a barn with a handgun.
So yeah with a 21 feet safety zone (at best) you are not likely to be shot by some juiced up would-be kidnapper, if you just RUN.

I absolutely agree. Aside from photography, firearms and self-defense are my largest interests. I'm glad to know I'm not completely alone on this forum.
I wish I could lists SIG-Sauer under my photo equipment list :-P |

Leroy is right! If you don't plan to use it - and no, kneecaps don't count, don't even get it out. We're smaller and if we hesitate for a second our own defense could be taken and used against us. Its one shot - protect yourself or don't.

Yup what he said. Run. I'm deadly with a handgun out to 50 yards. But.... when the bullets fly many people lose fine motor control in the shooting hand. They grip too hard with the whole hand when the trigger finger pulls. I don't keep a pistol by the bed for self-defense. I use a shotgun. There was a shoot out near Fort Bragg a few years ago in which a guy holed up and fired on the police. They fired back and several hundred shots were fired. No one was wounded. Even if you're hit keep going. Remember women are tougher than men. ;)

Lol, I think she meant you have "one shot" at defending yourself. Unless your carry weapon happens to be a Liberator or a blowdart gun, in which case you actually only have one shot. |

If we're talking about police officers and robbers that can't shoot someone when they try to, what good is someone with limited or no training going to do with a gun in a potentially deadly situation.
Hypothetical situation:
Let's say some lady is walking down the street late at night and no one is around. Let's say some guy walks up and pulls out a gun (or a knife) and says give me your money. She pulls out her gun...he's either shooting her or stabbing her at this point...and now she's dead.
Leave the guns to the professionals. The smart thing to do when someone asks for your wallet is to just give them your wallet. Maybe throw it and run the opposite direction, whatever you have to do to get away with your life. I'm guessing that most of the time, pulling out a gun isn't the answer.
