yeah so a friend of mine has one that he wants to sell to me for next to nothing. If there are any opinions on this lens in the infinite abyss of DPC wisdom, please share :)

Definately sharp with excellent image quality. In my mind, it is the best deal out there of any of the nikon lenses.

In my experience, an incredibly solid and amazing lens. Some argue it is sharper than the 50mm f/1.4. Overall, a must-have lens that I am currently hunting down, renown for its amazing contrast and awsome low light performance; the 50mm f/1.8D is worth a lot more than it costs, and that's very rare in the lens world, especially for a "low-end" lens.

Get it. It is the best lens I've ever owned.

the only danger is the sharpness is addictive - I started being really unhappy with all my other lenses because the quality of this little lens was so amazing.

I upgraded all of my lenses since. So beware! :-)

I hate redundancy but as everyone else has said, this is an amazing lense. One would be hard pressed to find a reason against purchasing it.

Colors are bright, lines are sharp, low-light performance is amazing (I know the 1.4 would be a bit better in this area but I wasn't convinced that it was $200 better). Plus it is a fairly usable range. The only issue I've ever had with mine is a problem shared amongst all primes, the inability to zoom.. When in tight crowds, the ability to move forward and backward to get that necessary composition is limited and you'll find yourself missing this.

This lens has completely screwed me over.

I won't be satisfied until my other lenses will perform as well as it does. It's going to cost me ALOT of money.

If you want to be happy, get it. If you don't want it. I'll buy it!

wow nothing but raves! I'm not surprised hehe.
Also, how does this one compare with the 50mm 1.4 and the older 50mm 1.8 (non D) ?

50mm 1.4, not worth it unless your shooting weddings and need the absolute best

Non-D just doesn't meter subject distance, which is only used for flash metering.

Couldn't agree more...there's no better lens in my bag, but I don't use it as much as I should...it's superb and the 1.4 isn't worth it

From what I have read, 50mm is the easiest lens focal length to make. Usually only 3-5 elements in 50mm lenses. This makes them subject to comparitively little light distortion inside them.

Therefore, all 50mm lenses in every brand usually have very good color and excellent sharpness. Chromatic aberration also seems to be typically low.

Photozone.de places the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 slightly higher than Canon's for sharpness (although it's doubtful that there is any visible difference to anything but a computer and that only in the strictest laboratory settings). I have heard that the color from that lens is excellent as well.

What probably makes all the difference with this lens is the on-camera performance though. Things like autofocus.

Apparently the Nikon lens does very well in this regard.

I'd definitely recommend it.

Actually you could say all primes are the easiest lenses to make. They all also offer better image quality than any zoom lense.

I was shopping for a 50mm too not so long ago and I checked out all the reviews I could find online.

I found a really nice review comparing the 1.8 and the 1.4, unfortunately I don't have the link anymore.

Bottom line is that the 1.4 at 1.8 is sharper than the 1.8 at 1.8.
The 1.4 was reaching it's maximum sharpness at 2.2 while the 1.8 was reaching it at 2.6 or 2.8. The advantage was pretty clear on a 100% crop comparison.

So if you want the best, go with the 1.4. If you want to save money, go with the 1.8, you won't be disapointed either.

Anyways I love my 1.4, I don't see myself selling it unless I stop photography.
