I'm interested in how others do as far as their progress here.

Are you on a uphill climb with higher and higher scores?

Are you spiraling downward, because of burnout or something?

Or, are you just on a bumpy ride down a long dirt road, like me?

Edit: Thanks Ben for fixing typo in title... :-)

My average is steadily going up. I have good pics and bad ones still but my highs are getting higher. I just had my second best score in the steve davidson challenge and now I have a new second best in scene it. let alone the ribbon a few weeks ago. I have felt pretty burnt out though but it hasnt really hurt me I guess.

Roller Coaster springs to mind, but thats life and I'd want for no more than to peak and trough on a weekly basis, it keeps me meek ;)

This is just like me.

You remember that Simpson's episode where Sideshow Bob was tied under the car and they thought it would be fun to five through the cactus patch...that's where I am right now.

With changes in the site, better equipment and software, it's pretty hard to track really. What once may have been a 7.0 score, now scores around 6.0 (assumed, no case study or anything).

That being said, my ship has been taking on water now for a very long
time due to a shift in what moves me rather than looking for wow.

My first entry was a 6.671 4th place finish...

I, uhh, have not even come close to that since.
I got very lucky in that Challenge.
Very.

I am learning to use my camera better and have improved my PS skills and workflow...so although my pictures (actually, scores) haven't improved - I still feel that I am improving.

Or not.

:)

Edit: Fixed the score from 6.7 to 6.671

i thought i was improving, but this weeks challenges have taken a giant crap on that notion...

seriously though, i do feel that ive improved a fair bit over the past few months. maybe its this site, maybe its my camera upgrade, maybe its my increased commitment to improvement, who knows. but i do feel that ive improved my creativity and vision, as well as my PP skills, since becoming a member here.

I started with 5.7 and hit the southern peak of a sine wave with a 4.6, but probably exceeded my RMS peak of 6.3 which my next entry should be about somewhere about 5.2 then proceed to the lower again.

Changed something to a better word!

I had a good run a couple months ago that led me to believe that I was improving, but my scores since July have confirmed my lower-middle class mediocrity.

If progress is measured by score then I think I've reached my ceiling. I have been stuck at the 6.5-6.6 plateau for quite some time. I'm so tempted to photograph a super model and just enter that but I'm not gonna! Also, does anybody know where I can find said super model? :P

I'm taking much better photos and challenge entries, but my scores are staying about the same. I WILL NOT have any more sub4 challenges...

bumpy road complete with potholes, valleys, mountains, swaying bridges, bandits, trolls, angels ....(amongst a cast of thousand)
08/31/2006 08:50:39 PM · #17
I charted my percentile in excel. Individual contests are all over the place (bumpy ride) but my average stays at 30th percentile (dusty road to nowhere).

That being said, I'm learning a lot about the pictures I want to take and am developing a portfolio. I'm not trying for higher scores, though I do make an effort to avoid things that will obviously turn off voters, UNLESS there's a reason for them (which there often is).

I think I'm stuck on the bumpy ride ... of course it would help if I had time lately to submit even a junk shot!! :)

bumpy, bumpy, bumpy

Last 13 scores:
6.395 - high
5.871 - high
5.186 - low
5.111 - low
6.069 - high
6.467 - high
5.253 - low
4.989 - low
6.329 - high
5.232 - low
6.046 - high
5.129 - low
6.156 - high
and my current entry is right around my average of 5.45

Oh, but since I started 2 years ago...VAST improvement. I stayed at a steady level, then had a drastic increase at the beginning of '06 and am now riding the bumpy road. Time for another drastic increase.

I started out and saw myself improve especially on the post-processing.
but later on down the road, realize that I'm subconciously post-editing most of what I take, sometimes so heavily that they looked stupid.

Although I have made very few challenge entries, I feel my work is getting better. Mainly due to the fact that i am actually taking the time to do PP. Before I usually did none, or if I did I had no idea what I was really doing.
08/31/2006 09:14:50 PM · #22
From most recent back to first challenge I entered.

7.546
5.161
3.98
6.185
5.996
5.112
4.391
5.617
5.649
5.407
5.668

When Silhouettes and Subjectless are done, there will be two more very low 5 scores. Maybe even a five and a 4.9.

So... no progress that I can tell. Just an inability to consistently enter challenge photos that please more people than they irritate heh.

Uneven improvement in scores here over time. Not totally correlated with my improvement in photography and PS skills, which has been more steady. This site takes considerable time to learn what works with the fairly unforgiving voting membership.

I think I've developed a thicker skin due to my participation here. So, photographic skills progress aside, I've become psychologically more "heat hardened and tempered".

Did you get an upset stomach from that ride? Now THAT'S bumpy!

Started off getting 4.xxx, have moved into the the steady mid to high 5 category with a couple of 6+ scores and a recent 5th place in the rope challenge, I'd definitely say I'm getting better, I couldn't spell camera when I found this sight.
