Is it acceptable in High Key Photography to have large areas of 'blown highlights' or is the target to have white areas as the major component?

Neither.

High-key lighting is a style of lighting that aims to reduce the contrast ratio present in the scene. It is used to create a light mood. High-key lighting is harsh and has little contrast.

It is not to be confused with high contrast and blown highlights,

Here is how to keep them all straight (even though I mention B&W the same applies to color):
- Normal contrast black & white photos contain equal amounts of black, gray, and white. (Histogram is fairly even across.)
- High contrast black & white photos contain black and white with little or no gray.(Histogram is U shaped.)
- Low contrast black & white photos contain little white and little black but lots of gray.(Histogram is hill shaped.)
- High key photos contain very little black, some gray, and mostly white.(Histogram is heavy on the right.)
- Low key photos contain very little white, some gray, and mostly black.(Histogram is heavy on the left.)

I consider that more of an example of high contrast.

This is what I would think would be more "high key"
