I am making a colage of photos that will sit under the cd dish for a clients first album. The photo is about 14.5cm x 15cm and will be made up of about 40-50 very small photos. What is the best way to do this in PS, I use 7.0.

I figure I would make a canvas to the right dimensions and then place the photos in the right spot. I just don't know how to do this. i really need to be able to lay all the photos out and then be able to move them.

Please ask if this isn't clear.

You could take your individual pictures, and edit and resize them. Then you can select all and cut and paste onto your canvas. Then, you can use free transform to move the sections around.

At least, in my limited PS knowledge, this is how I'd do it. I'm sure a PS guru would be able to help you out more

You can accomplish this just as you said. Create a canvas the actual size that the finished product is, but make sure that the DPI is set to the printer's specification--this is very often somewhere between 240 and 300.

Then individually open each of the colage images and cut and past (or drag and drop) the layer containing the image into your new collage layout. PS will place this image on a new layer. Each image will be on its own layer and you will be free to move, resize, rotate, etc. them individually.

I don't know if you are looking to line the images up, but to do so, you can drag guides onto the canvas to help you line them up. To do this, click in the ruler area and, still holding the mouse button down, drag the pointer out into the canvas area. This will drag a blue line out that will either be horizontal or vertical depending on which ruler you dragged from. Then you can use these to line up the individual images.

Hope this helps a little. I would provide screen shots, but I am at work now and don't have access to PS.

Do you mean something like but with different demotions?

I used PS/CS and I think PS7 has this feature also. Here is how I did it.
1. New canvas the size and color you want it.
2. Goto Edit > Rules and grid > set your grid up the way you want it. In your case 2.14cm because 7 is the only divisible number between 40 and 50 with an almost square canvas. It would give you 49 pictures.
3. Goto windows > grid > lock.
4. copy your picture and past in your canvas (new layer) and resize to 2.14cm x 2.14cm and push to the gridline and it will lock in place.

Hope that helps.

thanks everyone. I really like the colage of first 500 ribbons. I may do one like that and one more chaotic and overlapping. I appreciate the how to advice.

If you are thinking of doing lots of colages in the future seriously consider Fotofusion from Lumipix //www.lumapix.com/ This is an incredibly simple program that turns out beautiful results. Good luck.

If you want a free program, Picasa will make a collage. I think it has four different templates. Nothing fancy, but I believe it can make one like Southern Gentleman's tribute to the blue ribbon winners.
