I am starting my own part time photography business and need to know how smugmug works exactly. I would like to be able to give my customers a web site address that would allow them to preview their photos and tell me what they would like to order, an online proofs page. Can smugmug do this? Can you password protect seprate albums so that only that customer can view there pics? I am new to this and am teaching myself, sorry if these questions sound elementary. My little hobby is turning into a business faster than I know what to do with and I am scrambling to catch up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok I am a smugmug user and yes you can put up password protected galleries for clients you can also put up a private gallery that will not be listed on your website, you can only see the private gallerie if you know the link or if you email the client the link to the private gallery on your website

From their the client can order prints that they want but I dont think they can order a printed proof page, they can only order single prints of the images. Also if you go for the profesional level of smugmug than you can set your own prices to your prints and also fully customize your site.

I hope that helps

Even as a non-pro user, clients will be able to order prints, but you won't receive any of the money.

As digital pins said, you can have password protected galleries, as well as private ones that a client would need a direct link to gain access too

If you would like to try smugmug for free for seven days, click the link in my signature, or enter the reference code TiAmCc4R4j9is where it asks for a reference code

You will also save $5 should you choose to subscribe to their services

ETA: feel free to post any other questions you may have

Thank for the response. So let me see if I have this right if I upload an image then anyone can purchase it and I don't get the money? How do I avoid this?

In your control panel, you will have to make sure to turn off the buy prints option. It's default is that people will be able to buy prints, but you can switch that off for each gallery.

With a pro account, there are various security measures that you are allowed to implement, including right click disabling, and watermarking.

ETA: with a pro-account, as digitalpins said, you set your own prices, and then smugmug takes a small cute as well as printing costs (I think. I'm not a pro member), but you receive everything after that.

Buy the pro account. Then you can set the prices any way you like and you get all profit mailed to you after the transaction.

If u upload and image anyone can order.... yes thats correct,

But if you upload a print into a password protected or private gallery than only that client can purchase it

The only was you earn money is if you set your own prices which is the professional level

You don't need a direct link for password protected galleries.

Edit to add: I see you are questioning anyone buying a print and you not getting money. Well you can go to the customize gallery page to each gallery and turn off printing. Then no one can order. As Pidge has already posted this and I am just restating.
