Photo Laureates is and is not a scam .... it is not because they do award prizes (or so I hear). They are because the way they cover their prize money is by selling the books. there is no way they can make any money off of the 50 or so people who would normally be buying the book. So everybody wins so that rather than selling 50 books they can sell 5000 books. At any rate, don\'t be fooled because your photos are not critiqued by professional photographer or artists. I doubt seriously they are critiqued at all. Looking at some of the posts in here obviously some of you have come to realize that already.
Another point I would like to make to those of you who have purchased items from PL; you should pursue getting your money back, which is to say, approach the company and ask for a refund. You won\'t get it probably but threaten them with a law suit and reporting to the US Attorney General. The fact that they said your photo would be \"published\" because of its winning status constitutes a contract. Gluing a photo into a already published book constitutes fraud. If glueing was all that needed to be done than we all could take someone else photos and glue them in a book and sell them. I have not personally looked at any of the books but if there is an ISBN number than the book is registered with the library of congress and probably copyrighted. to sell an altered version of the book is a breach of copyright laws and carries heavy fines as well as prison time. each book sold would be one count.
Anyway that\'s my take on it. It is a scam and your photos are not really being critiqued by anybody of any credibility. John you have posted on this forum twice (snicker) and I challenge you to provide everyone in here with your credentials and some history of your background and/or the people you claim are looking at the photos these people are sending in. I am a professional photographer/writer and know how to critique a photo as well as publishing laws and methods, I also know many people in the business of both trades and publishers. put your money where your mouth is, I for one hate to see good people taken for a ride.
