I'm putting down the same comment I just put onto this photo:

'My wife said I wasn't clear enough with my intentions for this photo...
I'm not really into sports, and was making an artistic comment on the vacuous nature of these guys posing by the beach playing volleyball. That's why I called them airheads in the title... there's nothing going on in their heads! By removing their heads and the ball, I was making a comment on how I saw them. Obviously this photo wasn't for everyone, but I still stand by it.
Thanks for (most of) your comments anyway.'

Does having a knowlege of what I was trying to achieve make any difference here?

I'm not bitter, as I know this is the sort of photo that doesn't do well here anyway, but in this instance I went with my own taste.

What were you on Bob?! You're a nutter! I think your evaluation of volleyball players may come in for some criticism. :D

There's definitely some kudos being both ends of the scale though. ;)

I'm right behind you with this pic.

Frankly I think this is one of my better pictures but either because I CHOSE an anti sports message or because of the play on words that might not have had the same double meaning in other parts of the world I came in 75/79

Oh well I stand by my pic

Yep, last place isn't so bad, after the initial embarrassement is over.

Maybe there should to have a challenge of the worst/ugylest photo you can do challenge. Maybe some of us would have a chance for a ribbon. Van
09/22/2003 10:16:25 AM · #12
That's really not a bad idea. People could learn a lot of what not to do from that. After all, to make a great photo you have to know what would make it bad.
09/22/2003 10:55:59 AM · #13
so we would give the blue ribbon to the last place entry?

or give high scores to bad shots?

too confusing!! i need a panel of judges to postpone this challenge until next year

How can you make the assumption that there is nothing going on in their heads? Are you saying that all people who play sports are airheads? Or are you saying all people who are in shape are airheads?

Just curious.

Bob, I think this shot got the treatment it deserves.... personally, I think your comment here shows alot of disrespect, I'm not much into flowers or insect shots but I don't think people who are into these things are airheads. Every now and then I am amazed how supposedly intelligent people are so narrow minded.

Crumbs, I think there are a couple of threads here that say more about the people posting than about my photo or me.
In this particular photo, the empty posing of these particular couple of people by the beach is pointed at by my particular interpretation of this photo.
If I say a cow is purple, that does not mean the same as saying all cows are purple.
Let's not get so defensive, people.
I'm not saying everyone was wrong to score it badly, just that I stand by it, and I wondered if having more information about my intentions made any difference.
I'll now leave all the belligerent people to go about their business.
BTW, I really liked joannadiva's take on this challenge.

Mr Lobster,

You are a bad person.
You show no repect.
You must be punished.

Hmmmmm, I think theres a challenge in there somewhere.

"The Punishment of Bobster"
Illustrate your proposed punishment of Bobster. Your composition should include assorted sports equipment and the number three.

Can I join the club with this one ?

At, least, Bobster, you ended up at the tail of the snake. I always look for gems there. Look at it like at an honorary mention.

I think you conveyed your point quite clearly, but then I am not unfamiliar with the use of the term "Airhead" in a humorously sarcastic manner.

Perhaps the most suitable "punishment" would be to make you write up an official DPC "How'd They DO That?" article (see under the "Learn" menu) so that other DPCers can avoid accidentally replicating this effect.

My only possible improvement suggestion for joannadiva was to have a Lego Guy hanging ten off the front of the remote.

Bobster: I got your basic intention ("airheads", their heads were shown empty), but not the "bigger" meaning. When you talk about "the vacuous nature of these guys posing", that doesn't come across because they're in the act of playing the game, not posing (at least, that's how it looks). So, from that standpoint, your impression of the image wasn't fully communicated to me. The biggest problem I had with the shot was that the editing limitations meant that getting the empty heads meant screwing up other parts of the shot. It just looked clumbsy to me - but, like I said, I get that you were limited in how you could achieve the effect.

Joannadiva: Your shot was my favorite "not really a sport" shot - I gave it a 6. Maybe I was biased because the idea had occured to me. But you did an excellent job - much better than I would have been able to do. Nice work.

So, Bob, airing your opinion is okay, but airing mine makes me belligerant? I also stand by my opinion that this scored low because, according to the masses, it was not well done. And I'm not sure what difference you want explaining your motives for this shot to make.

My comments have caused no disrespect to anyone on this site.
To quote you: 'Every now and then I am amazed how supposedly intelligent people are so narrow minded.'
I also said 'I'm not saying everyone was wrong to score it badly, just that I stand by it'.
This topic is over.

So your comments, in your words, have caused no disrespect to anyone on this site..... They may not have caused disrespect, but they certainly showed plenty. Maybe I'm taking a little too much exception to them, but I found both your image and your comments rather ill-informed.

And when people feel that they have had their say on your comments, or the site council deems it necessary to lock this tread, will the topic be over. Not when you feel you have had your last say on it.

Just remember, you are the one who brought this up, if you don't like the responses you are getting perhaps you should think through your comments before posting them.

So which of you gentlemen wants the "honor" of posting the post which pushes the "Lock Thread" button?

Please cease "engaging in personalities" immediately and confine your comments to the specific "Individual Photograph" this thread is designated to discuss. You may continue your comments on site etiquette in an unmoderated Rant forum at your convenience, or perhaps better yet, hash out your individual differences using PMs.
