I'm interested in making a website, but can't really think of where to begin. I have the webspace, and can probably swing for a domain name in the near future, but I can't come up with what kind of design I'd like.

The site will probably just be a bio/porfolio for now since there aren't many photographic services I can offer with my camera, but I'd like to make the site in a way that I can add services in the future.

Where do I start?

I can't think of how it should look, what colours to use, flash or non flash, the style I want...etc, etc, etc.

How do you guys get around to making your sites when there are just so many decisions to be made in advance??

sigh...

I started with black, then white and for some reason swung to red...I have no idea why. LOL!!

As for design...try it. You will know if it doesn't work...! Basically look around at other sites....make notes of what you do and don't like, what you do and don't want...what colour schemes jump out at you etc. Then look at your final list and start looking at layout designs that match what you want and then look at colours.

My suggestion is to make it as simple as you can and give it a good clean feel. Stay away from flash as much as you can.

Also, I'd work more on functionality before you even bother with style. Styles and colors may change, but you want something underneath it all that will work no matter how you make it work.

Yeah I've heard that a lot of computers can't handle flash, and I wouldn't want to turn potential customers off right away because my site wouldn't work for them.

Simple is always good. I find I always clutter things like this up because I just have so many ideas and want to incorporate them all.

What Judi Said... and Cryingdragon.

Basicly, take notes on other sites with what you like and don't like.

Also, I second staying away from flash... but Tons and Tons of people tend to like it...

Ultimatly the choice is yours with what you like and your preferance of how you want to show off what you do.

It also depends on your level of html Dhtml java perl and so on.

If you want some help and stuff, send me a message... I am littlegett everywhere.

You sound like me here. I have been running my gallery site for several years now, and it has gone over several several changes over the years.

Sometimes because I want something differnt, sometimes because I learn something Different and Sometimes because my idea wasn't working and needed to be altered. I have been self taught on webdesign.. lots of trial and error.

Go to //www.registerfly.com has dot coms for $9.99.

I am in the same boat with my site. I offer no services but wanted to show my work. I decided to use Jalbum to post my files which keeps it really easy. Then I just wraped some HTML around the base design and I got something to work with. It is a work in progress and I will gradually build it into something I like, but for now at least people can see my work. I already have some bands lined up for some shoots so I am excited.

I was too lazy to write code or use another app to put a gallery on my site, I just linked to a couple other places :P

I already had the space and domain, and wanted to learn a little CSS, so I made the site, and changed it a few times.

I'm with Judi on the Flash thing. However, If you're comfortable with HTML, download Simpleviewer and customize it to your tastes. It's Flash but it will simplify your portfolio. I have all the code. Let me know if you need help. I'm a developer so I'm glad to help.

My site isn't perfect and is still going through changes but I can tell you to keep out the clutter. Simplify it so the customer doesn't have to dig through mounds of text that's too small to read to get to the places they need. Sites like Yahoo.com and MSN.com are just horrible. I'd stay way from all that text. The customer wants to see your work, not read a novel.

Monica... basic web site building nowdays isn't much harder than typing a paper in a word processor.

My suggestion is that you go here //www.nvu.com and download this FREE html editor and start playing. Get a basic hosting package from //www.godaddy.com and you're ready to go.

PM me if you get lost.

What WYSIWYG programs does everyone like to use if any? Can be free or $$$
08/28/2006 02:34:01 PM · #15
I don't like to use any WYSIWYG editors because I can write cleaner code without them, but, if I were going to, I'd probably use Dreamweaver.

If all you want is a gallery, then I'd recommend using something like gallery2 or pixelpost - which you can find and download to use on your own site for free, and both can be set up fairly easily, with pre-designed templates that look reasonable without any extra work.

Otherwise you can set up a photo weblog with something like Movable Type and a custom template set.

I use Dreamweaver, expensive but the most powerful editor out. I've been testing nVu //www.nvu.com and it is pretty darn good and free.

FWIW, Microsoft Frontpage can write some NASTY code.

I did the weblog thing for a while and that worked out well.

I'd look through template sale sites such as allwebcodesign.com for inspiration and ideas on design as well as searching for the sites of other photographers and noting what you like/ dislike about their sites.

I'd avoid trying to incorporate flash into your website unless you're willing to invest the time and effort involved in learning how to create it yourself, pay for a template from a site such as the one I mentioned above that includes it or pay someone else to create it for you.

Simple and static can still look great!

I am a fan of any directory based product. Something where you can drop the pictures you want to see into a directory and it builds the page for you. The great part about that is you can update your site by just trwoing your image into the correct folder on your server, or your computer.

I had posted this in another thread. //dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=415392.
1&1 has domain names for like $5.99 a year, by the way.

I use 1&1 and am still on my free 3 years! They have 25% off right now which comes to $2.25 a month and $5.99 a year for domain name.
I found my site to be "kinda" easy. I used PHPNuke and Gallery on my site. Still have to convert my photos over to Gallery 2.1 so that I can have more options for what it looks llike, but it is pretty decent at this time.
The only thing that I added to my site, besides customizing some modules in phopnuke (IT IS FREE as is Gallery!!) is the top javascript.

This is what Gallery is all about. Love the load it up and there it is, with all my settings and ready to go.
