I have some questions and thought I would tap into the vast knowledge base that is very prevalent in the community of DPC. I am basically new to photography and somewhat new here. I am not very versed in a lot of the aspects of the craft, but it is becoming something I cannot stop doing and a very passionate pursuit and enjoyment in my life. It has become my main drive on my off time and I guess you could say I am addicted, but I am enjoying this addiction a lot and would rather do this than any anything else I have found.

One of the many questions I have in regard to photography is how does one get started if they want to try to sell their photographs? How do you start getting a portfolio together and what is entailed in that regard? How does one get their name out there as well as their work? I am not sure where to start. Many people who have seen my work think I should try to sell them, and the more they say this the more I wonder if I should at least try.

Initially, I would like to matte and frame some just to see what they would look like and see if it is a viable pursuit to do. I understand that most of the costs would be out of pocket and that is fine. However, I have never done this sort of thing and my curiosity level has risen to a point that I can no longer ignore the drive to do something more with the pictures I take. I would really like to know how those that are in the craft got started.

Mainly, as you can see from my portfolio here, I do landscape photography and would like to at least start with that. I am not saying that I want to quite my full time job, but I would enjoy selling on the side just for starters to see how things progress. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any help in this, tips, tricks, things to keep in mind, and to know some of the obvious ins and outs of this endeavor.

Thank you in advance, Michael

Go to your local art center if you have one in your area, hopefully they promote photography, the one in my town does, Ive been a member for about a month and have already sold some of my work.

In the Seattle/Everette area there are many frame shope. Some of them offer classes. It might be an easy way to frame a number of prints and get a feel for that end of things.

I don't know about Everette but there is an art center in Edmunds that shows photography (Emmunds Art Center I think, but I could be wrong).

Shooting challenges is an interesting way to build a varied portfolio. A few different angles/photos from each challenge and over a few months it's pretty easy to build a nice portfolio of 20 or so images.

I looked at your profile and you've got some nice work there. Good luck.

Thanks Doc, much obliged for the information. I will check Edmonds out and see what I can come up with...
