The first reason is this:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/538/thumb/379583.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/538/thumb/379583.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Iím only grateful my careers adviser at school didnít encourage me (armed with his little print outs) to become a vet or an English teacher; my horrifically biologically incorrect titled and misspelled submission for the PEAS challenge is a major embarrassment to me. ďSpadeĒ. I mean, honestly, what a tit I must appear. And will continue to do so for all eternity because I canít correct it, and well, serves me right for being so thick. This is what a college education does for you.

This does, however, explain why our cat Jarvis has looked perpetually confused since the day we took him to the vets to have him fixed... Still, Iím now wiser in the ways of knowing whatís neutered and whatís spayed.

The second reason of self imposed spannerhood is my second DQ in 26 entries (phew! That was close!) . This:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/537/thumb/379756.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/537/thumb/379756.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

got booted out because, I am told, ďThe addition of pixels to create extra "negative" space to an image is not allowed.Ē

I guess, in retrospect, I can see why this was the case, and I regret having brought forth shame and disrepute upon the womb of my mother. I was a bit surprised, initially, because thereís nothing really about this sort of thing per se in the rules and all I thought I did was apply a black border, albeit thicker top and bottom than at the sides in a widescreen sort of manner, to an image that was already predominantly black. I thought after the DQ; if it were a print and I used black backing card, no one would have a problem with it... It wasnít even especially well done; you can clearly see the edge of the border on a brighter than average screen (I found out to my chagrin when I viewed form the wifes laptop).

But now I do see where theyíre coming from, as it could be construed as creating pixels, them becoming an integral part of the image, as opposed to ďjust a borderĒ. Iím hoping it was one of those grey (well, black) areas; or Iím totally naïve and it was obvious it would be DQíd from the start. Iím not pissed off, this isnít a rant. It wasnít doing shockingly well (5.55 at DQ, which is just above average) so I donít feel robbed to any degree. Just a bit embarrassed really. I wonder if anyone else has ever been DQíd for the above reason?

Still, that was my week here, and for some reason I thought I wanted to share it a bit. I did have another entry validated in the last few days, so who knows, maybe things are on the up!

If you write a really nice letter to Langdon he might correct the typo for you...

Oh, so you meant "Spayed"!!! I get it now. :-)

Terribly cute photo, BTW.

Poor David!
The DQ is one thing, but the spelling would irritate me, too.
Write to Langdon, it is worth grovelling to get that off your record :-)

Actually I read the "spade" and smiled to myself thinking how clever this person is to camouflage the word for sensitive souls hahaha..wouldn´t worry about it at all, it looks on purpose! Females are spayed males are neutered btw

very humorous and well-written. thank you!

the border issue has been one of the more common reasons for DQ, and occassionally contentious. My ultimate conclusion is that it only counts as a border if we know it's a border.

and your peas entry was a good laugh in a yawn of a challenge.

The border issue has two aspects to it. Most of the time people frown on an unevenly applied border (thicker on one or more sides than others), they especially frown on it if an unevenly applied border blends with the background.

I think, were you so inclined, that you possibly would get away with it if you made a thick even border around the whole thing, but I'm not SC. At the least in the case, you could make a 1 px internal frame of some low value gray and then go with the thick black. You'd have the same effect for your eyes.

I totally appreciate the title. It sounds right even with the spade business. Kinda looks like someones been doing some crude vet stuff at home.
