I was just reading this history of photography and was amused but not at all surprised, that there was a negative reaction to the popular discovery of photogrpahy ...

A newspaper report (c1839)in the Leipzig City Advertiser stated:
"The wish to capture evanescent reflections is not only impossible... but the mere desire alone, the will to do so, is blasphemy. God created man in His own image, and no man- made machine may fix the image of God. Is it possible that God should have abandoned His eternal principles, and allowed a Frenchman... to give to the world an invention of the Devil?"

Forgive me father ...

Does that sound a little bit familiar? Like the popularity of TV, computers, computer games, music of all types through the ages ... oh and worst of all - medical breakthroughs

If God created man in his own image he's either got a seriously messed up mirror or he's one ugly, sexist megalomaniac.

Reminds me of some guy we saw at the ferry docks the other day, handing out some flyers or something. The back of his t-shirt was emblazoned with enormous black letters that said "The Internet is of the devil", and the front said "Education is of the devil". My stomach actually turned.

So he'd have us believe that these schools that turn out illeterate students are in fact doing god's work?

HUH? May the Gods help me...

God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts. Whomever wrote the above newspaper article I believe is the later.

No where in the Bible have I read that taking a picture of a person was wrong. I believe the motivation to his paragraph was the rivalry between artist and photographer back in those days.

You must account for the religous climate being MUCH different now than in 1839. Things are more liberal in some respects, less in others.
