tuesday's coming, and i sure brought my coat...!

the ups tracking page hasn't been updated since friday. this makes me a little anxious, though my boyfriend assured me several times that ups just forgets to scan once in a while. where's my camera? is it getting here yet? is it in the state? is it at the campus post office (which is in the same building and across the hall from my office) and the just are slow in processing it because of all the freshmen getting on campus?

i brought one of my lenses in to work today because i wanted to try it out the second it got here.

oh, i also found a Maxxum 70 at best buy the other day and figured it's probably similar enough to the 7D. held it in my hands. fell in love. had to be pried away with the promise of kittens (we were on a window-shopping trip, the best buy is next to a pet store).

i can't sait, guys, and it's not here yet...!

Just wanted to update, UPS has sent me tracking info and it has shipped earlier today, to arive about Tuesday. I told my boss about it after work and he was expecting that I'd ask for Tuesday off (he's a photographer as well, and owns a nikon D70) :D Either that, or he'll ask me to go out and shoot for some stock photos we could use later. I love my boss sometimes :D

Anyway, I'm trying to put it out of my mind because if I think about it too much I'll just get really excited and the week will pass by much slower.

However, in a few days, I am totally going to spam this place up with my dSLR-ness :)

well, i've got a cardreader and laptop with me most of the time anyway...i will probably pick up a 4gb before winter, though. or ask for one for christmas :D

SWEET!

CF cards are used in the KM 5D, 7D and A100.

1GB and 2GB cards can be had for 30-50 bucks... 4GB cards are only a little over 100 bucks USD around here. (taiwan)

I own a 4GB and when I shoot RAW, it's not really enough...

If I had an extra hundred USD, I'd probably go for another 4GB card.

I saw a 5D go on eBay for under $470 before shipping...anyway, since Sony's A100 has the same mount for lenses I'm not worried at all about a lack of them. And considering after buying this body I'll be pretty much out of frivolous money, I don't anticipate picking up any new lenses for at least another six months.

Anyway, for no other reason besides te fact that a.) I enjoy having obsolete equipment and b.) I already have a Maxxum and I honestly wouldn't want to use another SLR at the moment, I'm about 98% sure I'm not going to get the A100. I thought about it at one point, but suddenly the idea of my dSLR sharing the same brand as my video game console bothered me a little bit :D

ETA: Also, the 7D takes CF cards, right? I've already got one for my Powershot anyway, I could totally hold off getting a bigger one for quite some time (at least until my cash flow builds up a little more [hey, anyone in pittsburgh wanna hire a freelance photographer? :D])

ETA2: Okay, guys, I just bought and paid for one, and supposedly it will ship before Friday. ican'twaitican'twait :DDDDD

I'm not, once I get my 15-30 I'll be more or less set....except for a prime, which the KM 50 1.7 are now showing up on EBay one after another, selling for $85-$100 (used). Probably due to the fact the Sony 50mm 1.4 is selling for about $360. So, people that hung onto them are trying to cash in.

Mr Ed, it sounds like things are just in transition and they are merely letting stock run through before making more of a particular part...

I wouldn't worry about the long term availability of lenses...

The 50mm f/1.7 has been impossible to find around here for ages. I've sold a handful of those cameras via word of mouth and the last couple of KM mount cams couldn't get the lenses wanted...

That was OK because those people didn't have a clue but...

I saw the 5D for like $550 USD equivalent new a couple of months back...

A100 is $999, 5D is getting harder to find, but it's around $730.

I also don't want to confuse or change your mind, but lenses from 3rd parties are getting harder to find. The following lenses....right now....are impossible to get:
1. Sigma 50-500 (either version)
2. Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX
3. Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 (B&H still has them)
I called Sigma to find out when these will be more available. Their not even sure, but they will probably be renamed for the Sony, which uses the same lens mount.

The following are still easy to come by:
1. Primes (though most of the Sigma primes have macro capability)
2. Macros (105 and 180)
3. Long zooms (70-200, 130-400, etc)
4. Some wide zooms (Sigma 12-24, Tamron 11-18)

Though Sigma's website shows new lenses being made like the 70mm f/2.8 Macro.

If you are leaning toward the 5D, take a look at the Sony A100. It's basically a 10 mpx 5D. But I'm not sure where the pricing is right now.

Hey, I already have a Minolta Maxxum, it's just not digital :p

Just because a company withdraws from the market, doesn't mean that their cameras suck or that they are no longer available.

Unsold goods and EBay still work.

they got bought by sony

sony released their Alpha A-100 which uses a KM mount and rebranded KM lenses. Sony and Carl Ziess will be releasing more lenses for the camera so i would expect them to be backwards compatable.

7D is built like a tank. 5D is lighter. Go for whichever is more important.

I haven't handled a 7D so can't compare them, but I've certainly been happy with my 5D. I believe the 5D starts up a little quicker but the 7D is slightly ahead on some other specs. Having the chance to handle them both could be worthwhile... in my case I couldn't justify the cost of a 7D to myself so waited until the first post-Christmas special on the 5D to get one.

My main comment is that I think it's fine to be considering buying a 5D or a 7D now - I imagine the prices for both are rather good. I saw a friend tonight who told me he had just purchased a 5D - unlike me, he did NOT have a previous investment in Minolta lenses and accessories, so he was simply choosing it on price and capabilities. He paid only slightly more than half what I paid for mine eight months ago (and mine was on sale!) - lucky him (and, I assume, lucky you)!

I love my 5D :-) It was the perfect choice for me! Just the right amount of camera in my hands, and at a good price to boot!! I've even found plenty of Minolta lenses still on eBay, so I don't have any worries about lenses (not to mention the new Sony ones!).

But the best advice has already been mentioned, and was given to me as well: Go hold the camera in your hands if you can. If that's not an option, I can tell you that the 5D feels much like the Olympus E-300. So, it's a little bit bigger than the Canon Rebel XT, which felt too small for me. Or it's fairly comparable in size to the Nikon D50....at least to me :-)

I have (had) a 5D and pretty happy with it it does have bracketing in the menu pretty easy to find it has all the controls you need and is a nippy lottle camera I can reccomend it .

I looked into this for a friend a little while ago. I seem to recall that the biggest difference for his set of desired features was the slow startup.

I think the 5D has an instant or near-instant on, but the 7D is still a bit longer...

Can anyone comment on delays? (if you want to measure this, turn the camera off, press the shutter button all the way with everything in manual and while holding the button, turn the camera to on.)

Oh yeah, I should also mention that I saw a 7D new for less than a 5D new at some other places a little while back. I almost got it.

7D is better built, heftier, faster, has a better LCD/viewfinder and obviously has better controls. It would definitely be my choice if it weren't for the problems that seem to come up with them (back/frontfocus, AS errors, etc.), although on the whole they seem to be fairly reliable.
