www.costcophotocontest.com

the theme is "give us your best shot," which, admittedly, is kind of lame. but the international grand prize is a $2500 costco gift card and first prize is a $1500 card.

i'm going to enter i think, but when you beat me make sure you buy me something pretty! ;)

Sounds tempting.

Here's a puzzler - they are calling it their "international" contest, but only U.S. members can submit images? So where is the "international" part again?

Anyway - worth checking into.

Cheers.

I saw that too. I was a bit concerned about item #10 in the application. Didn't really know what it meant. "All enteries become the property of Costco.".

So does that means even if the photo loses, I would no longer own it? And if I was selling it other places, I could no longer do so?

I knew I shouldn't have cut those introduction to law classes :)

To answer your question about who owns the image if you enter... yes, it usually means that by entering you sign over all rights to the person or organization that is holding the contest. I've not read the rules of the Costco Contest, but I've found that most will have this as part of the rules. Win or not, you no longer have the right to sell or use the image if you enter it. Usually they want an image that hasn't been published or sold before either.

That means that paticular image. You still own the copyright on any other images you took even if they look close to the one you entered. This is why it's important to read ALL the fine print of any contest you are considering winning. It's bad enough when all the winners become the property of the contest holder, but there are probably going to be a lot of images they can sell to stock agencies or use for promotional useage amoung all the non-winners as well.

The rules do allow for previously published works.
Where I find them confusing, though, is that the entry form only asks for state/zip, doesn't mention province/postal code, but another rule mentions federal, provincial, state and local taxes.
Nothing else mentions country eligibility.

Good find! That makes a bit more sense.

Thanks, Mike. I'll have to give it some thought about entering. Don't really think I have a chance to win, but it might have been fun just entering. But I don't think I like giving up ownership.

I read the rules (on Costco.ca) and it does not say you give up your rights to the photo. It does say that all photos you enter become the property of Costco. Since you'll just be entering a 4x6 or 5x7, I take this to mean that they just own those copies (ie, they won't send them back to you). It says nothing about giving up rights. They can't do much with a 4x6 print anyway.

Thanks, Karen. I really like your take on this. Reading the rule in that view it seems quite logical.

Good luck to you if you enter again! And thanks for your comments.

PS. I read the Canadian Rules. Interesting that in order to claim your prize you have to answer correctly a mathematical skills question. This must be some technicality in Canadian law?

I`ve been knowing from this contest for two years now and I`m from Mexico...For what I`ve seen about the winning pictures, they like good "person" pictures that are not over processed...(I don`t remember have seen any landscapes in the winning entries...)
